So… my mother passed away this morning at 5am. She was 96. A good innings, as they say. The NHS were awesome but stretched beyond capacity. The care home was great. The majority of those who cared for her in the last few months of her life were lovely people from far flung lands and I appreciate their presence, professionalism and care. This is a heartfelt message of thanks to all of you. #nhs #carehome #ukpolitics #immigrants #fuckfarage #refugees #nurses #doctors

The 3rd daughter of 4. A nervous child & never a confident person. Left school at 11 to care for her disabled mother. Thought her lack of schooling meant she wasn’t intelligent. But far from it. A feminist before it became a thing with an acute sense of injustice. Widowed at 46 she a habit of being right (infuriating for the teenage boy she raised alone). She knew computers were the thing (in the 70s) and insisted her son to pursue a career in software. She voted #labour all her life.

She read child psychology books from the library (which she loved) to help her better understand her children. She clumsily tutored her grandchildren in maths and English. Even attempted to tutor my son in musical theory. Flash cards were her thing. She read the Guardian cover to cover everyday. Learnt to drive in her 50s. Then taught me to drive. She was a devout catholic and argued theological concepts with her now atheist son. She had good health apart from “rumatics”.

She married the love of her life Bill who was sadly taken by cancer and she was sad they never got to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. But later she married again at 60 to wonderful kind man who was devoted to her. Her life was full of kindness and respect for others. She’s not unique. There are many women who were equally inspiring to their children but she was my mum and it’s been good to tell you all about her.
