@freemo Oh, absolutely, I'm all for taking the view of using a server that does have the feature if you want it; that doesn't seem to be good enough for everyone though. But it seems like the "fediverse" way of doing things (saying this very much as a newbie).I do think it's more about the QT-associated attitudes/behaviours than what it is technically. Not having it on a big server seems like a potentially good thing, kind of pattern-break.

@freemo So that's maybe one thing that's interesting about the whole issue and debate - then why are people so demanding about having it implemented where it isn't?

@stux I fondly remember when Jumbo introduced free coffee. We were obsessed about it where I worked, definitely got them regular customers.

Jedi: Fallen Order is pretty much free on the current Steam sale, for anyone here interested in that kind of thing.

@tarkowski @Gargron @nilaypatel I don't see what right anyone has to come in and demand power over Mastodon. I don't see why anyone should trust the subset of people who'd be calling the so-called participatory shots any more than the person who made Mastodon into a place worth trying to colonize in the first place...

@tarkowski The "so-called participatory" comes from my expectation that power wouldn't really be collective/shared, fully. Participatory approaches sound good on paper but they can just mean power gets captured by whoever manages to control the "participatory" process best. (I'm looking at it from the POV of participatory research to be open, but I think the same issues hold.)So it's going to be a shift in power, more than just a release - it gets released *to* some people more than others.

@tarkowski @SocialCoop I do get that. There is the alternative view that it's the open sourceness that matters for the fediverse, as I understand it. Mastodon is the big name but you don't *have* to use that particular software to access the whole same network. I get that people *want* it anyway, but there's not the same kind of risk as with Twitter or Facebook being out of users' control. To me, that takes away a lot of the problem/justification. (I also perceive some of what I've [...]

@freemo "Gonif" sounds right, thanks! Yeah I'd thought of schmuck first too but it's a different dimension, I'd never heard of gonif before.

@freemo I have no taste in design but looked anyway - https://syncleus.com/ gave Potential Security Threat warning.Otherwise - the heading-levels (e.g., Email -> Personal etc) were maybe too subtle for me to immediately see there's a hierarchi there (and not a missing line). I'd also get confused reading from left to right, since I don't really know what the numbers in the left-hand column mean, but that could be different for your audience of course!

@freemo Yeah indeed, the PGP / GPG column. It's the first thing my eyes go to and it wouldn't mean anything to me (as an ignorant sort of person). Depends on who the audience is whether it's a possible issue!

@freemo Not in itself, but it requires a bit of effort/willing to disengage and then go on to see what the right-hand side means, and then go, oh, I understand email addresses. (Also since the formatting is the same so you really have to parse the content for a moment to know it's not just more things you don't understand.) So it's just that you might lose some eyeballs there.

Slightly old news, but the misinformation/misinterpretation still goes around so maybe worth boosting it a little."Many commentators have claimed that a recently-updated Cochrane Review shows that 'masks don't work', which is an inaccurate and misleading interpretation."https://www.cochrane.org/news/statement-physical-interventions-interrupt-or-reduce-spread-respiratory-viruses-review

@freemo Yeah, it's that old absence-of-evidence- vs evidence-of-absence. And additionally, if I understand correctly, the meta-analysis (and similar studies) only considered a particular type of study, which was hard to do well on this. And there's the whole N95-level mask versus flimsy-flappy surgical masks difference. I don't think the latter do much unless everyone wears them (versus outright sneezing mucus around), but N95s might give some protection even if everyone else is faceholing.

@freemo Yeah definitely - it needs empirical evidence for specific cases.Based on my readings so far, personally, if I need to go indoors (especially if I can't avoid public transport), I'm throwing the kitchen sink at myself - antiviral nosespray, nasal filters, N95, and mouthwash with CPC when back home.

@john I have very little clue, it's from https://www.craiyon.com/, with the prompt: A realistic orange vulpine lammasu, with the body of a fox. The head belongs to Albert Einstein. The fox is orange. The head is smiling. The body is visible. The tail is bushy. The head is a scientist with his tongue out. The face is pink. The head is fully human.
