@freax That looks like BusyBox/Linux to me - you won't get a usable computer with just Linux after all. Also, how come the article is blank unless you run nonfree JavaScript programs?

@sebsauvage I'm pretty sure windows 10 updates are generally downloaded in peer to peer fashion, so that would explain the 8 hours.Anyway, it's 2022, why use that proprietary malware? - install GNU/Linux and attain the freedom you deserve.

@Mixtape @stux If you want the learn about the kernel, Linux, here's the source; https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/On GNU/Linux, bind is excellent for DNS and nginx is excellent for websites. For Linux, wireguard is an excellent VPN.I would recommend against nextcloud, as the image links is provides by default need JavaScript just to see the image - here's my nginx image/video/file hosting script:#!/bin/bashdest="suiseiseki@suiseiseki:/var/www/localhost/files/"url="https://suiseiseki.com/files/"#need at least 2 args[ "$#" -gt 0 ] || exit 2for upload ; dorsync -- "$upload" "$dest" || continueprintf '%s%s\n' "$url" "${upload##*/}" | tee >(xclip -i -selection clipboard)done

@Linux_in_a_Bit Linux is a kernel, did you mean GNU/Linux or systemd/Linux?You can install just Linux, but your computer won't be usable, as Linux will panic if it can't find an init: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/init/main.c#n1552systemd just needs a shell and it will be an OS.

@SplitShockVirus Did you mean GNU/Linux? m$ hasn't compiled edge as a kernel module, rather into a bunch of elf's that rely on glibc.Excerpt from readelf -s:11: 0000000000000000 0 FUNC GLOBAL DEFAULT UND raise@GLIBC_2.2.5 (3)12: 0000000000000000 0 FUNC GLOBAL DEFAULT UND [...]@GLIBC_2.3.4 (4)13: 0000000000000000 0 FUNC GLOBAL DEFAULT UND puts@GLIBC_2.2.5 (2)Please cease throwing your freedom away.

@pyrate @motobug @parisc While older Intel chips lack MINIX, since 2008, the ME has been built in (and is in a number of libreboot compatible thinkpads). For older thinkpads, you can just not include the ME firmware and such backdoor won't do anything (as the processor has nothing to execute).Newer intel CPU's won't even boot up without the ME of course.

@iamtakingiteasy I don't understand this image. Why is the wallpaper of an OS and the mascot of a kernel with "sickOS" written on it added together without a gnu?Linux is not an operating system, as it does not operate unless it can find an init; https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/init/main.c#n1552

@iamtakingiteasy Sadly the copypasta is partly incorrect; https://www.gnu.org/gnu/incorrect-quotation.htmlI haven't yet gotten around to the ~12h undertaking of a fully correct GNU/Linux copypasta, but maybe eventually...

@boilingsteam Did you mean GNU/Linux?After all, these proprietary games usually rely on glibc. Also, Linux is free software, not just "open source".

@eal Did you mean Arch systemd/Linux?Arch is not a fork of the kernel, Linux after all.Indeed, if one isn't good enough to install Gentoo-libre GNU/Linux, it is easy to fall for the temptation of proprietary malware and spyware.

@koakuma A few years ago, I had the sudden realization that C and assembly are the only good languages and finally I was able to write decent programs.

@aety I myself have realized that having a tracking device is pure foolishness, let along getting one that costs hundreds of dollars and has a screen that'll last all of 2 years. Here's the way to get a flip phone: https://pine64.com/product/pinephone-pinephone-pro-keyboard-case/ (too bad you need to disable the mobile and wireless chipsets to have freedom - which kinda negates the point).

@th Did you mean cracking? Hacking is simply playful cleverness, cracking is breaking security (no matter how mediocre).Sure, getting past heavy obfuscation in appliances (with proprietary software inside) will likely require some hacking, but the end result is a crack, so therefore it's cracking.

@eal Yes, you call them "Linux distributions", which confuses people into thinking that Linux is the OS.I say distributions myself, but only when I've mentioned the applicable OS.
