“NYPD Officer Fired Gun Inside Columbia’s Hamilton Hall, Manhattan DA’s Office Confirms”: https://www.thecity.nyc/2024/05/02/nypd-officer-fired-gun-columbia-hamilton-hall-raid/Also note this: “Cohen said no students and only police officers were in the immediate vicinity when the shooting occurred.” In other words, the officer had their gun drawn for no reason and used flash-bangs when that would not be normal for this sort of situation. It is lucky that no one was killed. (It's probably also why the NYPD wanted no journalists or legal observers present.)

@jvagle I am writing one, but it's a personal one for my family, not for the public—I doubt that anyone is interested in my childhood beyond what I shared today. I mean, does anyone here care that there was at least one house on block with a coal furnace, in the 1950s? The slides do have a link to an interview in ;login: a few years ago; very soon, there will also be an oral history interview with me available.

@mattblaze @karlauerbach Probably a lot easier on ships—far more space, including for antennas, lots of power, few weight restrictions, lower speeds mean easier aiming, etc. And ships don't have the advantage of altitude to increase line-of-sight range.

@kevinrothrock Apple is pretty aggressive at dropping support for older chips. I suspect that the M1 is even more endangered than most, since it was Apple’s first CPU. Translation: you’d need a really good deal to make it worthwhile. Note well: this is just me guessing!

@mattblaze I don't think so—the desirability of triggering it would depend on on the geopolitical situation, how many pagers had been handed out, etc. But I think that there are pager groups—the only time I carried one, it was for messages to all members of the Medical Aid Squad at Bell Labs Murray Hill—and you sent pages by calling a particular number. (These days, with text pages, it's probably a web service.) Any bets on Israel not knowing the login/password/group id? Not from me…
