@tante Sophomores are "wise morons". Or second-year students in an academic system with a typically much more rigid structure than in German universities.

@tante I like a lot of what you write, but with this I strongly disagree. Humans build tools. Tools enable us to do thing we previously could not do. You cannot play the guitar, but you can put Jimmy Hendrix on a boom box to entertain your guests. And it sure has a democratising effect. People who, as you said, "have not put work in" are not all lazy. They may be busy with living. They may be exhausted from a hard day job and/or they may lack the funds or connections to get proper training.

@tante If companies (or anybody) grab CC or other copyleft material for training AIs, I think that is morally ok as long as they make it clear that the results are under the same license. And that may mean "no commercial use" or "free to distribute and reuse". And it becomes really interesting in the case of GPLed software...

@ariadne @eff I disagree. EFF is, as usual, taking the long and broad view, and they are right. As far as I can tell, KiwiFarms does not have a contractual relationship with with Hurricane Electric. So they are not bound by their TOS/AUP. I know nothing about KiwiFarms except what's in the EFF article. They sound horrible. But we do not destroy bridges because some awful people use them.

@tante Not that I don't share some of the concern, but pens, printing presses, dictionaries, textbooks, and even mathematics can be "racist, abusive and dangerous". They tools. Tools can almost always be used for good or evil.

@tante I think that is a completely broken approach. Making it harder to make useful stuff is counterproductive. If there are problems with renumeration for original artists, that's a legal problem, not a technical one.

@tante I usually don't - or if so, only to anchor them in my brain. I like to speak freely (and interact with the audience, if possible). But I do work off a presentation to keep me focussed.

@tante Except for the price, the Apple Studio Display is great (and completely painless with Apple Laptops - everything simply works). If I had to pay myself, I would probably look at something like the Dell P2723QE or something equivalent from Samsung or LG.

@davidgerard Actually, he has a certain point. If a good has essentially zero replication cost, but at least some utility, then societal good is maximised if the good is made available at cost (i.e. near zero). That argument has been hashed out in the Free Software Community decades ago. You just need to find an alternative way to motivate and/or pay the creators.
