@vwbusguy It's really a shame more companies didn't fight the monetization of removing the headphone jack. Where we end up with a handful of entry level phones alongside Sony and Asus. Everyone else tried to ride Apple's strategy of forcing more Bluetooth audio accessory sales. A company coming out today, AHEAD of the EU mandate for making battery repairs easier, could make a big impression advertising features like swap-able batteries, SD card storage expansion, and headphone jacks.

@Adam @vwbusguy Oh yeah. That thing is adorable. Another on the list of grievances. It shouldn't be THIS hard to find a little pocket communicator. I REALLY miss the OG iPhone 5/SE size. That was kinda brilliant for travel.

It just clicked in my brain. What I haven't been able to articulate about why I'm so anxious about #Windows Recall. I'm sure others have already gotten to where I am. It's worse than "a system that tracks everything you do" and stores that info in a basic database that could be easily compromised. It's worse than a nanny surveillance tool for companies to spy on their employees.It's inescapable. It doesn't matter if I make a dozen "how to disable recall" tutorials. The second YOUR data shows up on someone ELSE'S screen, it's in THEIR recall database. It won't matter if you're a master #security expert specialist. You can't account for EVERY other computer you've ever interacted with. If a family member looks up an old email with your personal data in it, your data is now at risk.If THEIR system is compromised YOUR data is at risk. I just went from "vague feeling of unease" to "actively writing templates to canvas elected officials, regulators, and attorneys general."

@Wolven "Corporations won't want this on their employee systems!"Except for all the middle managers who think this will be the Nanny spyware they need to "stay on top of" their employees. And to the people saying "just use linux", ignoring the most obvious reasons why that can't always work, let's say you could do that. THE WHOLE REST OF THE UNIVERSITY STAFF WILL STILL BE USING WINDOWS RECALL.And all the data YOU send to those machines will still be archived on those other Windows machines. Looking around at the folks I wouldn't trust folks around me to keep their systems secure. A University will be a DELICIOUS target for Recall malware.

@timnitGebru It's been so frustrating to watch. There is no consumer facing business model for HUGE DATA CENTER cloud AI. It's all investor-bait, and a hype cycle following off the remnants of Crypto and NFT schemes. These companies' only hope is to convince the government to pour tax payer dollars into these systems.

@Adam Nope, but I know what you mean. A LOT of phones this year are either lateral moves, more expensive for the same kit, or the same price as last year but with features removed. The practical functionality of the smartphone has been eroding for years, and this year is accelerating that trend. Even our ultra specialty phones are less ultra and less specialist than last year.
