You can only change that perception with continued use of a different type. Positive continued use by heaps of new people. That’s exactly what we’re all doing now. I really struggle to recall that one big #peaktrans moment. There have been so many now. Rachel McKinnon’s attitude was probably a huge trigger. Sport in general. Seeing reasonable women being attacked for reasonable opinions. Redefinition of the word woman and bullshit about men having periods. Realising that polite social convention wouldn’t be enough. TWAW - because yelling something repeatedly is supposed to make it true? Woke men wading in to have a pop at women. God, so many things.

Coming to understand the breadth and depth of institutional/policy capture was another eye opener. The number of organisations infiltrated by those pushing a pretty sinister agenda and doing it on the quiet. The deliberate shut down of dissenting voices. Everything. #peaktrans

The push on use of the term “cis” and how it repositions women as a subset of their own class., never mind the way it’s often used in the pejorative. The stereotyping, the growing idea that women are just a feeling. Funding for research into male uterus transplants. Males taking female rep roles in politics. And pronouns. Stupid stupid pronouns! And teenagers/early 20s (especially males) dominating conversations about life as women before they’re even old enough to grasp any of it. Some of them will never experience it. Ever. Then telling you to be quiet and not mention some of it because it’s “not inclusive or triggering”. Oh fuck that. Seriously. How did we get here? #peaktrans

Then crime. Men committing crimes (often against women and children) and then having them recorded as female crimes. I couldn’t believe that anyone would be so stupid as to let that happen, but oh they are that stupid, and what’s more they don’t understand or care why it’s stupid and dangerous. Prisons. Hospitals. Refuges. Changing rooms. Toilets. No spaces left for women. None. #peaktrans

The growing realisation that policy was being made and implemented without any consideration of impact on women. Not just because they hadn’t thought of it, but because they didn’t give enough of a shit to consider it at all. Being seen as progressive is so much more important than any impact on women. The thought of an elderly person being frightened and confused when they can’t specify sex of person giving intimate care, or someone sharing their hospital ward. The same for any vulnerable person. Children being told off and shamed for “misgendering” like they’d done something incredibly awful and rude. No. No no no no no. #peaktrans

The lack of appropriate research into medicating and transing kids. The changing of medical/psych definitions. Doctors making money. Vulnerable Teens. The impact of social media. The words of amazingly brave detransitioners basically confirming every worry and fear you ever had for young people when exposed to these ideas. It never ends - there’s too much #peaktrans material to even talk about now. We’re drowning in it.

Re: the changing perception of rape (& associated trauma) I'm totally convinced that it's down to porn. Whenever you hear people - usually men - question the severity of effects you can almost always hear a "oh come on is it really THAT bad?" lurking not far under the surface. I don't doubt this comes from rough sex/forced sex as portrayed in porn. A loosening of grip on what consent means and how rough sex translates into situations where women might not have control but seem to enjoy it.

I’m in a weird place after last few days. The high of spinster’s arrival and being thrilled about opportunities to chat with like minded people then the low of being totally turned off and feeling glum about the incessant snark and bitching between warring factions. Not just here, but Twitter too. It’s sucking my will to live. *drama* Ok, not to live, but to engage and participate. I’m hoping that getting it off my chest will be enough to boot me back out of my slump. 😑
