Just saw a very very good post with a profound discussion of gender roles... and the content warning included "Cis-Males just don't get it".Which frankly, disregarding cost more spoons than reading the entire 4-page post. Don't use your content warnings to complain directly about people!

@emacsenI wonder if this is why "algorithm" driven timeline orders ruin things. Rather than allowing a social culture to decide when too much "viral" activity is past a cultural threshold (ie, discounting people with "too many" followers or reposts, or activity that suggests they're only in it for the numbers), it mixes the numbers in a black box and promotes those it thinks are important. Which means the struggle to be heard becomes a resentment that can't be resolved, and poisons the community.@cwebber @rhiaro

People talk about alpha men or beta men but what if I want to be a release candidate man or maybe a stable man providing long term support?

I still wish Mastodon had a "boost but add CW" option, for when I see toots that I feel like sharing but I don't wanna just spout politics or whatever on others' timelines.

@ilovecomputers @KayPengwin I don't see any link previews on my feed view, the expanded in-page feed view, or opening it on your instance?

I noticed lately that the games people really love, are ones they can just pick up and play with, even if they don't accomplish things. They're toylike. Even the shooters, the good players wind up with a synchronization of movement and sustained patterns of video and sound. Being good at even competitive games isn't about wiping the floor with someone, it's about honing the patterns to chain perceptions in reactions in a pleasing manner. The good games don't get in the way of that too much.

When the "like" scores on your posts are public, when there are advertisers blaring in your ears, and you're starving for the dopamine hit of having people enjoy your metacommentary on someone else's post, and the people who follow you aren't likely to see you unless you get a lot of interaction or repost constantly, and there's no content warning / subject fold, it trains you to make a lot of noise. It feels like, someone stepped out of a very busy street with official sponsored audio playing and a parade going by and street vendors hawking their wares--into a quiet cozy restaurant / pub / bookstore, where people are sitting around tables, murmuring gentle conversations and chatting cordially, and the newcomer hasn't realized they don't need to shout to be heard anymore.Come in, sit down, have a seat, enjoy the ambiance, hope you acclimate soon :3

At some point I feel like we gotta adress that Adobe, the largest seller of art creation software, doesn't actually MAKE any software.Like, they have some really great tools and they just sit on them because they bought nearly their entire library from other companies, just as a means for more income, they don't know how to work on the code.

Like, if you have a tool you really like, and Adobe buys it, you are never seeing any improvements made to it ever again. Unless someone outside them finds a way to tweak it that they can buy, embed, and sell to you in a new version.

@wolf480pl Oh no, they do that too. Flash based animation studios were hanging back 3+ versions not to avoid paying for more software but frequently the newer versions couldn't handle the complexity of older files. (Adobe was working on tacking on an animation engine from AfterEffects that no one wanted)Of course now you don't buy a version, you lease access to the software, and they put a weirdly invasive and hard to uninstall updater on to keep tabs on your use of Adobe products.

Setting up Peertube (and hopefully soon Pixelfed) gives me the strangest feeling - it feels familiar and an older part of the web. I have a little computer, and I put my videos on it. Just like any old self-hosted website. I can go look at the hardware. I can log into the terminal and I know where it keeps my files. But the ActivityPub part brings it automatically into the social layer.I like that.

@vinesnfluff @irina @Takiro @Krita ok but it's possible that the piracy part may not actually remove the machine learning part. Depending on both Adobe and the piracy engineers, it may actually make it impossible to *opt out* of it.
