@SonofGrace Airline industry has pilot staffing crisis because (1) can't afford the existing vested guaranteed pensions for pilots and other workers, and (2) raising the minimum hours requirement for new pilots at airlines from 250 to 1500 hours.Bankruptcy would have fixed (1) long ago, but bailouts preserved the contracts.(2) was imposed by Congress after 2009 Colgan crash, even though both pilots had more than 1500 hours when hired.1250 hours of flying is a minimum of like $50,000.

@SonofGrace The best way to fix the problem is no bailouts and allowing airlines to bankrupt out of pension contracts, and eliminate the 1500 hour requirement to dramatically increase the pool of potential hires. No airline was ever putting a 250 hour piliot in command of passenger flights. But it allows them to hire people cheaply and put them as as third seat to build RELEVANT flight experience cheaply. Value of 1250 hours in a cessna 172 to a future pilot of a 737 is questionable

@SonofGrace I do think this has created a great opportunity for young people who realize college is generally a waste of money. The pilot shortage has led to airlines creating or sponsoring flight training programs for new pilots. You can literally show up with 0 hours and get to 1500 in a couple years, and it will not cost too much out of pocket if you go on to be hired by the airline who sponsors the program. I drove about 250 miles on a leaking run flat tire, but I had an inflator with me and kept filling whenever it got down to 15-20psi from recommended 35psi. I never actually drove on it with less than 15psi.I know if I say I drove 250 miles since noticing the leak, Discount Tire won't fix it. But IMO when the tire says "drive 50 miles on it flat" that means FLAT not 50%+ inflated.Tires have about 5000 miles on them.Safe to fix?
