I have a friend who is getting cyber harassed/extorted. She has reported it to the police, who can do nothing, is screening her calls, and is contemplating deleting her social media to escape it. First off, this is fucked and we need to do something systematic to protrct people against this (also better privacy, people shouldn't be able to get her phone number and address from data brokers). But since we don't have a systematic solution, are there any resources I can share with her about protecting heraelf? I know there are a few people doing work on #privacy here, but I didn't find anything pinned or shared with a quick look, could someone direct me in the right location? Thank you!

@Wolven Yeah, it's rough and hard to sort out. Like, I've been struggling with depression since around when I got covid eaely last year, been hard getting out of bed in the morning and just rough all around. But is it from covid, or from the fact that we basically gave up on mitigation as a society. Is it from covid, or from the fact that my job required 100% in the office for my unit, despite the fact that I can do 80% of my duties remote and many other units were able to work full remote. And meanwhile the commute is bad again, drivers seem to have become bigger assholes, the climate is messed up, and there are worrying trends and events in both the world and in the USA. So it is really hard to sort out how much is covid, and how much is everything else!

@pluralistic @mttaggart @neurovagrant I've seen multiple organizations cost-cut themselves into oblivion, including my local newspaper and several of my old favourites, so I don't know why you think they won't do the same with LLMs. It will be counterproductive sure, but the people with money and/or charge either have different priorities, or just are that dumb.

No, I don't want to see the "AI makes shit up and lies to you" stories. It's completely wrong, yes. The stories are not funny enough to make up for the climate impact and free advertising.
