@newt Hey there, I’m a non-fiction narrative writer, recovering interior designer and former bond analyst African-American female. My background is so eclectic, ‘lots of people don’t know what to even make of it. I’m a Columbia U. finance grad & Johns Hopkins Econ grad. I’m looking to follow writers in addition to journalists. On Twitter I maintain a separate account, narrowly focused on literary topics. Hope to be able to do that here on #mastodon #literature #writing

“Toot Toot Tootsie (Goodbye)” (1922) was performed by Al Jolson in THE JAZZ SINGER. It’s a song about a guy who promises to write his girl, who’s leaving on a train. The “toot” is the train whistle. A “tootsie” refers to a sweetheart or a small foot, usually a woman’s. I went down this etymological rabbit hole, all because I was trying figure out the connection between the Tootsie Roll and the Mastodon “toot”.

@BGP Is that pier still intact, given the storms CA’s been experiencing? I’d been planning a trip to CA’s central coast to visit family; but now I’m not so sure.

I'm thrilled to own this signed print of a 1955 photo by Don Hunstein of poet Langston Hughes in Harlem in "Our Blocks Children Garden". It was Hughes' idea to help local kids plant a barren patch of soil next to a stoop at 20 East 127th Street. There was a picket next to each plant with the name of the child who planted it. #blackfriday #blackjoy

@TheOldGreyGhost When I scroll down past this photo, the sands appear to move. This must an optical illusion of some sort.

It sounds like the Supreme Court is putting the Free Speech rights of adherents of Religion ahead of the Free Speech rights of LGBT couples. Expressing religious views under the guise of "Free Speech" apparently trumps the right of a same-sex couple to obtain services in the open market that are available to other couples. If an interracial couple offends the service provider's religious views, can those services also be withheld from that couple as a form of Free Speech?

Well, I just put out my “, - la and the Coach” yard sign. I guess I’ll have to wait and see if my Trumpster neighbor across the street — the one who stole my sign from our mayoral race last November — will be at it again. #vandalism #harriswalz2024
