@futurebird the thing I hated in middle school was the zillions of worksheets where I couldn’t possibly learn anything because I already knew the relevant things. Years later it struck me that what those worksheets were good for was training, not education, and if someone had said so I might have been able to shift mental gears and embrace building the skill

@futurebird eventually they’ll figure out that Computer Science has a split personality, one side almost the same as Pure Math, the other side they’ll say is like Applied Math but very disorganized because they won’t admit how much that side is like Economics but focused on building Rube Goldberg machines

@futurebird @jturiano what fosters innovation is having people with the resources to develop their ideas. Capitalism concentrates that freedom into a few rich people, while the rest have to spend too much of their time & attention on necessities. To optimize innovation we’d have to maximize the number of people who can spend most of their time & attention on whatever they want, and minimize the number of people who can believe their ideas do work when they don’t

@b0rk I wasn’t sure if “how ctrl+c is handled” meant “how ctrl+c becomes SIGINT” or “how the response to SIGINT is determined”; I checked “the shell” for the former. It works over SSH which AFAIK only sends keystrokes, so it can’t be the terminal emulator. Since AIUI the SSH tunnel goes to the stdin of the shell, I figured the shell is handling that input.But I’m not sure that’s right and I don’t know what the terminal driver is, is that between the emulator (or SSH) and the shell?

@b0rk wait, the ssh command won’t get ctrl+c in stdin, it’ll get SIGINT, so to send ctrl+c it would have to respond to SIGINT by sending ctrl+c, which… maybe it does that? Does ctrl+z also work over SSH? Maybe it uses some other API to bypass the usual handling and get everything in stdin?It’s not weird that I don’t know this, it’s weird that I never noticed there’s a thing there to know

@futurebird @iwein when I was a kid, we had a family station wagon, and many of my friend’s families had one too. All a bit different, but basically pretty reasonable cars to go places with up to 8 people. Now they barely make sedans, and the closest thing to a station wagon is a smallish SUV. My dad recently got one to use like a station wagon with my step-niblings, and it doesn’t quite have the “die, peasant” look, but it’s got a milder version of the same problems…

@futurebird @iwein …I’ve got an 11-year-old sedan, and even that is bigger than I need. I’m hoping it’ll last until I pay off my student loans, and I’m not looking forward to what my options will be at that time. Especially if I’m lucky enough to have kids by then. I miss when they made cars that were just reasonable ways to get places, especially ones like our old station wagon
