I am legit mad that I can’t properly put a diaresis over a lowercase omega.Why must you do this to me Unicode and/or the Greek language? We could have had the perfect :3. But no, even though Greek has diareses, it doesn’t put them over omega specifically, and so even if I use a combining diaresis it just comes out as ω̈.

@scolobb ahh - for me, it comes out as those two dots being shifted to the right so they’re nowhere near centered over the lowercase omega.

@Estrusflask …I’m almost positive you made this up, but somehow this sounds really familiar.I’m not even sure I’ve seen it even if it is real - it just sounds so perfectly “extremely dumb episode of Doctor Who” that I think my brain’s assembling a false memory for it out of other very dumb episodes of Doctor Who.

@crlf @Estrusflask Hmmm. I was definitely watching Doctor Who around this time, but this isn’t ringing too many bells - I think probably I didn’t see this after all. Or maybe it was a really unmemorable episode.

@kaniini @lynnesbian @Gargron He’s actually right about this one thing, though … I actually don’t think I’ve ever seen people using Unicode fake-bold or fake-italics to indicate emphasis on this site. You know what I DO see people using? ALL-CAPS, or text formatting like *asterisks* that evolved as substitutes on previous platforms that didn’t support rich text or character sets beyond ASCII.And I’m the same way - I dramatically overuse italics for emphasis. But I didn’t *stop* doing that when I came to this site … I just kept using asterisks! (I’m actually having to escape all my asterisks because Monsterpit uses a fork that DOES have Markdown support, but I assure you, I wasn’t using them any *less* before then)When people do use wacky Unicode text, it’s mostly just for *playfulness* reasons, like “hey look what I found hiding in the character set”. The majority of stuff people do with Unicode pseudo-text is way too broad to support with HTML anyway.

@kaniini @lynnesbian @Gargron So what?Yes, text formatting is convenient. (Lord knows I like it, I’m an absolute italics slut) But it’s not a requirement for communication, and nor is it an accessibility issue to lack it. Not every platform needs to support rich text!

@kaniini @lynnesbian @Gargron “Stockholm sydrome” seems a bit rich, given that I *am* on an instance that has rich text, use it so frequently as to be instinctive (I had to manually go back and escape all my asterisks because I’m not 100% sure the formatting will translate from Monsterpit -> Pleroma), and do most of my talking on Discord (which also supports rich text).But IRC, 4chan, Twitter, and I think Facebook(?) don’t support it, and I don’t really think they’re all that much lesser for it.

@kaniini @lynnesbian @Gargron Last I used IRC, it only supported fake-formatting, where you’d type like /this/ or like this and those would be transmitted - asterisks or slashes and all - to another client, which would then recognize them and render it in italics without actually removing the original asterisks/slashes. The protocol itself didn’t include them … and so support on that level could be added by any Mastodon client without the instance itself having to support it. I just straight up forgot about Colored text though, somehow, despite all my years of Homestuck roleplaying, so you’ve got me there.

@minty_da this is valid but also I have, in fact, agonized for literal hours trying to figure out how to sort my porn collection in a way that distinguished “crossdressing femboys” and “girls b/w dick” without invalidating trans people, so honestly I sympathize with both sides here
