December 1. Start of #AdventOfSystemSeeing 2023 edition.Like last year, there will be daily prompts on the AdventOfSystemSeeing hashtag (making it easy to follow or mute). The idea is to do daily (15-20 minute) exercises in a System Journal (notebook). These could be a “make your own advent(ure)” sort of thing, or you can follow the prompts on the hashtag each day.

If you’re going to be following the prompts, you’re in “just trust me” territory. And we all know that whenever someone says that, it is a terrible idea! Well, it’s a matter of extending some goodwill on credit to me, and giving it a go. Sooo, first up.

Some folk shared their drawings -- Matthew's (@mattly ) drawing is wonderful and so is Jeff's (@JeffGrigg). I've done this exercise countless times, and I'm still not putting my drawing up here! :) Matthew's questions/annotations demonstrate so well what I was talking about above. https://hachyderm.io/@mattly/111503605177431430I also recognize that some folk might have drawn a simpler "idea" sketch. And the questions would be different, but we'd still have this "venue" for a conversation with ourselves

“Before you disturb the system in any way, watch how it behaves. If it’s a piece of music or a whitewater rapid or a fluctuation in a commodity price, study its beat. If it’s a social system, watch it work. Learn its history. Ask people who’ve been around a long time to tell you”— Donella Meadowshttps://donellameadows.org/archives/dancing-with-systems/Journaling is, among other things, a way of observing — of directing our noticing, listening-seeing.Cultivating Response-ability.

Soooo… December is soon. Should we do an #AdventOfSystemSeeing again this year? Downside: daily prompt threads can clutter the timeline, if not interested in the daily prompts and their related thread (context, quotes that illuminate the prompt, etc.) Upside? You tell me! (Systems folk get to “play too” when the “Advent of” thing is happening??)

@worldsendless Meadows is wonderful! It's not too late ... Day 1 can be relative to when you start -- doesn't have to be anchored to December 1 :D

Is there like a co-op for (tech) folk who are between jobs? Like, to be a space of lifting up and learning/sharing and whatever the community needs? Where folk flow through, and provide mutual buoying?

“Institutional memory comes in two forms: people and documentation. People remember how things work and why. Sometimes they write it down and store that information somewhere. Institutional amnesia works similarly. The people leave and the documents disappear, rot, or just forgotten”— an engineerhttps://landley.net/history/mirror/institutional_memory.html

“As usual, the lack of a well-honed proverb to cover the situation reveals a blind spot in the popular culture, and this in turn is probably the reason why so few of us actively practice Problem Avoidance.”— John Gall, The Systems Bible (The 3rd edition of Systemantics), 2002via https://mastodon.social/@josdeweger/114806058281049847

‘An Airplane has been defined as a collection of parts having an inherent tendency to fall to earth, and requiring constant effort and supervision to stave off that outcome. The System called "airplane" may have been designed to fly, but the parts don't share that tendency. In fact, they share the opposite tendency. And the System will fly—if at all—only as a System.’— John Gall, The Systems Bible

‘The word "Solution" is only a fancy term for the Response of System "A" (ourselves) to System "B" (the Problem). And it's a misleading word, because it implies something that can be done once and for all. But System "B" is sure to Kick Back in response to our Response, and then we must respond once again.’— John Gall, Systems Bible
