Bump City FishBump City Fish was my nickname that often preceded me as I traveled so cal. I was the youngest racer around. Already seasoned in nitro boat racing I quickly lapped the competition, grown men baffled that the kid that just took 1st and walked off the driver's stand with his milk crate needed to see over the railing. Ranch Pit stop, ascott raceway, and on I went. Now I started racing w/ the Frog at 7 years old. But soon after bumping up to stock, Dad surprised me w/ the gold pan RC10. Jump to 10 years old and I beat Jay at ascott one night, when he turned around to see who beat him, he contested, saying 'no way that kid beat me' my pit man 'dad' held up his lap counter and laughed as he and a judge in the booth state the winner, Bump City Fish! Now Jay becomes angry and his pit man as well. There was commotion and yelling. The commentator spoke up and broke it up. He proposed a deal for us. He said he would give us both entry to the slick-car race that was to start after our event. We both agreed. I was so excited, I knew I had a chance because I was much lighter than Jay. Plus I grew up on a ranch with a go cart to race around, and did almost everyday. So I walked down to choose a cart and climbed in...I remember barely reaching the peddles and getting getting my race face on. I sat gripping the wheel and the lap marshal walked over to secure my belt and he says 'you can't race, you arnt tall enough. I started to protest and he interrupted and said sorry kid. As he was telling the coordinator, I looked over at my dad that was there at the rails, doing his pep talk, and his face lit up. He ran waving his arms and asked if he could race my spot for me. Everyone agreed. I remember seeing Jay's face as he sized my dad up. In this moment my heart swelled as I knew the mastery of my dad. I was a little worried though. My dad was at least 60 lbs heavier than Jay. The race started and the carts took off really slow as they slipped thier way to speed. My dad being so heavy was in last place by the second lap. But like an incredible movie, he was starting to overtake the slow and squirmy drivers. Jay was out front by 3/4 of a lap. As the race progressed there were pileups and carts were in chaos. Except two. Jay and my Dad! By now dad had achieved full speed and was gaining ground. Jay started to look over his shoulder as the race announcer hyped on the battle unfolding. I could hear my dad's words echo in my head, "just drive your car, don't worry about who's winning" as dad zoomed by lap after lap I could see his unwavering face. And sure enough Jay glancing back, looking like he was sweating bullets. There were a few remaining laps and Dad was hot on his bumper. Forcing Jay to push his limits and loose focus, finally paid off, he clipped another crashed cart in the turn and spun out ending up facing backwards. DAD FLEW BY! with only a couple laps remaining I was jumping for joy, screaming "go dad" & we went home, me with my 1st place A Main buggy trophy, and Dad w his 1st place slick track trophy that was made with a engine shroud.
