Sometimes I feel I missed out on my true career calling: 19th century lighthouse keeper.

#EverydayCarry ( #EDC for the cool kids) is a big deal on dude-oriented corners of the web. Usually it includes some tacticool pocket knife or fancy Zippo lighter. It may be less macho, but my EDC is this “Indian worry stone,” bought at a Native American cultural event 30 years ago. It’s smaller and quieter than a fidget spinner, and carrying it means I’m always prepared…for anxiety!https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worry_stone

I joined Mastodon on this day in 2018. While it’s a bit disappointing to see so many ex-Twitter folks choose the centralized expediency of Bluesky, Mastodon has become a lot more lively and fun over the years.

Junior high school brass band Christmas Concert today. Solos by the first and second year students (except for a pair of twins, who did two piano + horn duets, switching piano duties!), performing a song of their choice. It’s cute seeing the kids power through the nerves and the occasional little smile of satisfaction when they feel they’ve done a good job. The amount of polish is surprising, and many of the first year kids are as good as their second year peers.

With work, school club activities, and the need to open presents while on FaceTime (so the grandparents get some return on their investment, seeing my daughter open her gifts), we ended up pushing back our Christmas festivities to today. In addition to grilling supplies, hot sauces, and a bottle of rum, I got a bottle-sized oak cask to age whiskey in. From Taru Holic, a Japanese company.https://taru-holic.com/#Whiskey

I have no idea if I’m a good father or not. The daughter that adored me is dead, the surviving 13-year-old daughter thinks I’m the dumbest mofo to ever exist, キモい, and fit only to finance her activities. My wife (Psychology, Bachelor of Arts) thinks she has the parenting thing down while I (Psychology, Bachelor of Science + Sociology, BA) can’t find my own ass with a map & flashlight, apparently.
