@tek Zoom does its own automatic noise reduction on top of already using a fairly compressy codec, so sustained background noise tends not to transmit as much as one would expect.

@Wrewdison @tek People who have operated Zoom for things like performance spaces and speaking venues have learned that the software also tends to interpret audience applause or laughter as noise and filter it out.

@tek @Wrewdison I wrangled Zoom for a synagogue's Rosh Hashanah service, which involves blowing a shofar (a ritual musical instrument made from a ram's horn) and the tone is an important part of the observance. Much to general disappointment, Zoom took that as unwelcome noise and filtered it out as well. 🤖 :flan_shrug:

I had a friend around my age who is very sadly no longer with us. He died a few years ago, and I miss him a lot.I think of him often around this time of year, because long ago he put up a simple webpage about why he was going to celebrate Independence Day on July 4th by burning the US flag.
