So- started working on my own BASIC implementation, and I'm trying to get an idea for how to handle datatypes. Traditionally, BASICs have relied on sigils after variable names for this sort of thing, so A$ is a string variable and X% is an integer, while a variable name with no sigil is a float.That's a little visually noisy although not the end of the world... I'm trying to see if there's something better that doesn't damage the language too much.VB could do something like 'dim X as integer', but that's like beyond Java levels of wordiness, and I don't think I want to go there.Any ideas? Keep the sigils? Put them in front of the variable?#BASIC #retrocomputing

My lib65816 + Java JNI-based rest of machine emulator actually works!I'm now about to compile C code in Calypsi, writing out a .PGZ file, load that (many segmented) file into the emulator, and it successfully runs it!So far, nothing too exciting, just uses a char pointer to write to the simulated Console device, but I'll take it.For those who are interested- The Java side emulates whatever hardware outside of the CPU I need, so RAM, console, eventually audio, video, etc. The CPU side is lib65816, written in C, which uses JNI callbacks to Java.I started to code the entire emulator in Java and then realized that even if I took all of the time to code all 255 instructions 4 different ways, I'd still have to test it, and then noped right out of there.

So, I just got an email from #instagram, saying they've suspended my account saying I've somehow "taken personal information" or I'm a bot or some dumb thing, and want me to upload a selfie with my username, real name, and a code that they gave me.Obviously, I'm not a bot, and I've never taken anyone's personal information. The only thing I can imagine that triggered their alarms is that I've never actually posted anything on instagram. I use it mainly read-only, occasionally commenting on other people's posts. (But even then, comments are few and far in-between.)I'm not thrilled with uploading a selfie, and I see no reason why instagram needs my real name. I don't really want my picture and name added to Meta's database. Anyone else get a BS request like this?

@pglpm @twylo Well, it's like anything, it's never all men, it's never all white people, it's never all republicans... The problem is, if you're in any kind of marginalized group, you'll periodically run into comments that will let you know exactly how people really feel about you.I see almost as many "har har har 'woke' har har" comments there as I used to on Twitter.
