@Moon Or, if you mean more "why" than what, basically their goal is to be a well-integrated jack of all trades platform. Texting, Microblogging, video host, video calling, web browsing. Andrew even has a pipe dream atm of manufacturing Blab branded GrapheneOS Android smartphones.That's their general philosophy, they want to be the alternative everything (for better or retarded, oft the latter) @verita84

@verita84 Well, I'm not vouching for the practicality of the plan, that's why I called it a pipe dream. I've just expanding on what they want to do, a lot of people don't seem to understand what their goal is when they do seemingly bizarre things. A video hosting site, at least, is possible, and something I can be happy with. I just hope it works, cause if it doesn't I might just give up on ever streaming my radio archive @Moon

@verita84 It barely even federates, so that's no good, nothing is easily searchable. It can take anywhere between days and weeks to process a single 5 minute video, I've never seen it happen same-day. If you're self-hosting, it might be an okay solution, but I don't want to self-host, and most Peertube sites have very low storage caps.Moon@shitposter.club

@verita84 To top it off, Federated video streaming, honestly, just doesn't make much sense. You can't just move your channel off, it's more liable to shut down than a corporation, the psudeo-decentralization doesn't benefit it the same way it does text, but it has all the downsides. Just seems like a dead-end.A thing I actually like about Blab TV is, it essentially has the same integration Peertube should have with Mastodong.@Moon

@verita84 They actually seem to be pretty smart about this. Only paying members can upload. If 10% of those users actually do, that's $600 per channel per year. I imagine the landscape of Gab TV will be mostly cat videos and QAnon podcasts with a few hundred views a piece. I'm already Pro because I bought their Trump Merch for Georgia as a joke, so it gives me a perfect avenue to upload shit that I've been looking for a home for anyway. @Moon

@verita84 Dread has some informative knowledge, but his conclusions, and the conclusions of a lot of FSE users like Blitz and Derek, are highly emotional, and should be taken with a grain of salt.Gab has had an amazing quarter, I get more engagement there than here by far. They're a lot more free to tweak things without having to worry about breaking Federation. It's a very imperfect company but it's not all bad. @Moon

@amerika I wouldn't say it works like Mastodon anymore from the user end, except in a very basic sense. They've changed just about everything, made a lot of improvements, and screwed some things up badly. But has a genuinely unique feel. Plus they're bringing back a multi-column option! Wish someone who isn't me would run a Federating Blab server, I'd use it! But that would be a real project cause it was pretty broken by the time it started resembling the current version. @verita84 @Moon

@amerika Oh, yeah. It was impossible to find good users on there from Fedi back when they were here, because it was just an unfiltered onslaught of spam. On the native site you were supposed to use groups to find users, but the rest of Fedi didn't have access to that at all! Plus, various other smaller features that didn't work properly at the time, I gave the community a bad rapAfter they left Fedi, a lot of that went away overnight, plus they've added better discovery TL's @verita84 @Moon

@amerika Some people were unhappy about Gab breaking it on principle or something but even before I largely turned to a more evenhanded attitude, it's hard to deny that it was the right call. Both platforms work far better separately than they ever did together. @verita84 @Moon

@verita84 Some people did, but they never lasted cause Gab just didn't want to put the time in to make all their cool additions Federation-compatible. And, a lot of them really weren't made from the perspective of a federated service at all, like the post edits. So the few people who liked the UX just used Gleason's fork, back when it was just a weird unfinished Mastodon variant. @Moon @amerika

@verita84 Never went away, but still not finished and they removed all the links from the main site, and they're supposedly adding DM's one day (soon, but you can never trust their timetable)I don't use it because I got banned from all the public rooms. Plus there are no notifications. Telegram won't ban you for 1:1 chats so it's just as good. Maybe for group chats with people who already happen to have Gab accounts it would be okay, since no one wants those notifications lol @Moon @amerika
