@raman What is a "right wing" mind? I don't mean to be snarky, but anything right wing rings my alarm bells and would like to know instead of jumping to conclusions

@salm456 @rkhuria @tempearth @cprogrammer @Deepsealioness @AmitRamesan @ranjona my worry is that "historians" will one day elevate Modi as a "non-partisan statesman" once Yogi ascends to power... Just like the comparison with Modi made Vajpayee look "moderate" in their eyes.

@SabinaBasha @ranjona any person sufficiently influenced by religion (any religion) cannot help harboring phobia (and bigotry) against other religions. That's the nature of religions, no matter what benign readings one professes publicly of their own religious text

@SabinaBasha @ranjona that said, context is of course everything. In India, the problem seems disproportionally among Hindus who are increasingly being unmasked for their visceral hatred for all minorities.

@SabinaBasha @ranjona sure... My opinion is that to the extent that religious people expand their morality to help others selflessly, they do that by ignoring unsavory parts of their religion and being nominal believers. So in that sense they may culturally identify themselves with their religion while not subscribing to the hateful tenets in the religion they were born to.

@SabinaBasha @ranjona I guess we will have to agree to disagree then. Deeply religious and humanism are inherently incompatible in my mind.

@ranjona Exactly... Thanks...🙏 As I once heard somewhere, for every "reason" that religion provides for doing good in the world, there are better more secular reasons to do the same, without the risk of it being freighted with superstition and hate. Morality of people is in spite of their religion, for the most part, not because of it. That's my view at least

@raman you should perhaps apologise for calling him "right wing" and call him absolutely "wrong wing" 😜
