@Lemondrizzle I saw another one on Democracy Now today (trust me, I don't go looking for these!) It was a Spanish concert pianist playing the theme from the movie Titanic on his balcony. But I decided to spare you!

What do you wise women think about Meghan Murphy's latest piece in the Spectator? I usually love her work, but this piece really irritated me. Mostly based on a couple of news articles and some social media posts, she takes millennials to task for failing to comply with social distancing. Several of those commenting on her Facebook post pointed out that in their experience, it was the elderly not taking it seriously. It's the same for me - in my building, it's the old people who just won't keep their distance, esp one sweet old lady I really like. And just today at the supermarket, we were shocked that most people (of all ages!) gave no one any space, getting right close, unthinkingly crowding close to get something off a shelf. Just didn't sit well with me to stoke inter-generational divides (however much those spring breakers in FL deserved criticism). I hate it when people do it using "boomers;" don't like millennials being made scapegoats, either.https://spectator.us/millennials-boomers-coronavirus-social-distancing/?fbclid=IwAR05vTRKhJGjPPnJczu8XApdPDGd4Gd69sue-q6wUyGLIBYxe6_dshJC4ks

PSA: Did you know that digestive problems can be a symptom of Covid-19? I didn't until today - until a relative fell ill."Most patients with the coronavirus have respiratory symptoms, but these findings from the early stages of the outbreak show that digestive problems are prevalent in many patients with COVID-19."Clinicians must bear in mind that digestive symptoms, such as diarrhea, may be a presenting feature of COVID-19, and that the index of suspicion may need to be raised earlier in these cases rather than waiting for respiratory symptoms to emerge," wrote the investigators from the Wuhan Medical Treatment Expert Group for COVID-19.The researchers analyzed data from 204 COVID-19 patients, average age nearly 55, who were admitted to three hospitals in the Hubei province between Jan. 18 and Feb. 28, 2020. The average time from symptom onset to hospital admission was 8.1 days."https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20200319/about-half-of-covid-cases-show-digestive-signs?fbclid=IwAR2H7wU-MteO2gHpU_jihAtoTerRFDJuqbQVRRk_m4hkKuuxYrmEGG0a154

For anyone who still thinks Covid 19 is over-hyped (you know who you are!) an account of a respiratory therapist:"This is knocking out what should be perfectly fit, healthy people. Patients will be on minimal support, on a little bit of oxygen, and then all of a sudden, they go into complete respiratory arrest, shut down and can’t breathe at all...It first struck me how different it was when I saw my first coronavirus patient go bad. I was like, Holy shit, this is not the flu. Watching this relatively young guy, gasping for air, pink frothy secretions coming out of his tube and out of his mouth. The ventilator should have been doing the work of breathing but he was still gasping for air, moving his mouth, moving his body, struggling. We had to restrain him. With all the coronavirus patients, we’ve had to restrain them. They really hyperventilate, really struggle to breathe."https://www.propublica.org/article/a-medical-worker-describes--terrifying-lung-failure-from-covid19-even-in-his-young-patients

"After less than a week, Public Health Madison and Dane County plans to take down a website that allowed citizens to report mass gatherings that violated government orders aimed at preventing the spread of the new coronavirus. The move comes after the website was flooded with spam, according to health department spokeswoman Sarah Mattes, including “people calling us names” and complaining that the effort constituted Big Brother-like government overreach."https://madison.com/wsj/news/local/govt-and-politics/public-health-department-to-take-down-site-that-allowed-citizens/article_798b4e2f-0c0a-5739-9880-95bacd507ebb.html#utm_source=madison.com&utm_campaign=%2Femail-updates%2Fwsj-news&utm_medium=PostUp&utm_content=66cdead15ecea89356319ad1cede9c76244b211d

"President Trump’s reluctance to use the Defense Production Act has been one of the most enduring mysteries of the coronavirus epidemic. The Defense Production Act is a 1950 law allowing the federal government to redirect vital industry for use in a crisis (primarily a war, but an epidemic would also do). Hospitals are desperately short of ventilators and respirators, and governors, doctors, and public-health officials have begged Trump to invoke the act to direct emergency production before hospital staff gets infected and patients begin dying."https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/03/defense-production-act-coronavirus-trump-respirators-masks-ventilators.html?fbclid=IwAR2xsac1t4cgyVDLI1qXUIagHJhmoaS1G4oaFPIiTR0A7syn_t1fwZS3rLI

@SheChanges I was just coming here to post this for you!! For anyone else interested, this clip is great. The whole thing is worth listening to.Short excerpt:Trump yesterday: “America will again be open for business… Lot sooner than 3 or 4 months… We cannot let the cure be worse than the problem.”Lawrence O'Donnell: “Donald Trump is not in charge of this one. He has not closed down ANYTHING… It’s America’s mayors and county officials and governors who have done that… And there is nothing Donald Trump can do about that. The governors of New York and California control more economic activity combined than most of the rest of the United States of America put together. And they are not going to reopen their states because of anything Donald Trump says... Donald Trump is not in charge here… And that is good news. And that includes Republican governors who have shut down their states.”

@knucker Absolutely that can happen. A downside to the decentralized platform is that (I think this is the right terminology) other instances can mirror your account. And they don't necessarily delete it if you delete here. @mk has said that if you delete here, a delete request goes out to the other servers, but there is no guarantee they will comply with that request. So I (and others) have seen posting history of accounts that were deleted here on other servers on the Fediverse. I have also seen the (timeline? set of posts) of posters who keep it private here on another server on the Fediverse. That's what I mean when I say this is a downside to decentralization. Twitter is centralized - if you delete, it's gone. People may have screenshots of some of your posts, but your whole account mirrored somewhere is unlikely.I'm tagging @error in case she wants to add or correct anything I've written here. I've gotten sloppy about anonymity lately, so thanks for bringing this up so I can remember to be more careful.

@knucker Just to add, there's a lot I don't understand about this SM platform, but neenster is connected here some way b/c all our posts are on neenster, too. I was shocked when I first saw my posts on neenster as I never joined. I decided I don't mind b/c I like nina, but she has others on neenster from gab and various places. In other words, spinster is not a safe, secluded harbor. We know we won't get kicked off for being trans critical, but that is the ONLY way this is a "safe space."@mk @error
