@mian I dunno. I've fiddled with that in the past and honestly all it did was give me a great appreciation for the work Puniko does keeping this instance online for us. I'm not sure I wanna take on that challenge.Plus, one of the nice things about community instances is the community itself. The "Public Timeline" is actually fun to browse through because we tend to gather folks of similar interests on the instance.

@rick @enigmatico Thinking on this front, is there a practical alternative to Reddit? I know Lemmy is out there, but having looked through the community a bit... is there a second alternative? I thought maybe WT.Social could fit in that space, but again that wasn't a great time either.

@prettygood @rick @enigmatico I mean you can credit leaving Reddit for my more active presence here on the fedi which is a good thing for me.However, I leave it as an open question if that's actually a boon for the community. :blobcatderpy:

I need to relearn when I'm supposed to remove people off of threads. IIRC, blindly replying and letting AkkomaFE guess who should be in the thread leads to creating unpleasant hell threads where they don't need to be.

At this point I'm wondering if I might do a better job of reaching my goals by starting each day on the fedi and in my chat groups with a "Nyanpassu" and ending it with a "Suya".It's weeby, goofball BS, but I'm also a weeby goofball on a weeby goofball instance. It'd probably fit right in.

Well, I guess I had to remind myself the hard way, but any game that you have to struggle for multiple days just to get *installed* on a computer because of how slow it is, probably won't run on that computer. In related news, a Microsoft Surface 9 Pro cannot run Baldur's Gate 3 directly at more than like, 5 FPS, while running off of an external USB flash drive. Also, it takes about 2 days to install.

I’m not an instance administrator or moderator so my voice here has relatively little direct meaning, but something I’ve found interesting is that the drama surrounding TheBadSpace is that the folks involved seem to be of the impression that they’re trying trying to create a block list.I could go for a while about my concerns about TheBadSpace’s specific implementation: issues about governance, accountability, clear rules, etc. But those are implementation details and I’d like to talk about architecture. At the end of the day, it’s fairly obvious that TheBadSpace’s primary intended goal is to make a confederation with unified moderation rules, a noble goal given the rather difficult problem that distributed moderation creates in practice. The problem, I think, is that rather than starting from that perspective, and working to create that confederation from willing participants, they’re trying to prune the existing system in to that shape. So rather than creating a community full of people with similar thoughts on the process of moderation and community management by opt-in, they’re trying to force the existing community into shape by deliberately generating conflict between instances, administrators, and users. Now, don’t get me wrong, I think that there is some value in generating conflict over bigotry. People will inevitably be made uncomfortable by these conversations, as they rightfully should be. But many instances are not single-user instances, and hand-reviewing every post ever made is neither possible, nor expected. But since the tools being wielded are instance-wide and since “guilt by association” is involved, this means that the process is generating conflict with good admins simply unaware of a post they weren’t involved in, and weren’t given an opportunity to manage. This is where the current design is inadequate. If you want to make a community where the association between individuals MUST comply with some set of rules, then you need to realize that you’re making a new community, not augmenting an existing one. The Fediverse that already exists is one of free association; the current software will automatically federate with anyone that your users tries to interact with. This means that by definition, you are associated with bad people (even if only temporarily.) You will associate with whoever your users interact with, and even with very good moderation practices you can only react to bad user behavior, so this means that even the best instances are “bad” instances if the guidance is “you cannot have bad associations” unless ALL instances are single-user instances.Correcting for this is as simple as making the community an opt-in system, adjusting the federation process in the server software so that it automatically federates with the community list, and then making a solid system of governance for community management would produce the desired outcome far better, and with far less drama and harm for everyone involved. This is functionally the same logic behind network ACLs. Yes, you can try and deny every bad actor on the world, but with dynamic IPs and an ever changing threat landscape, you will always be on the losing end of a cat-and-mouse game and will disrupt legitimate use of your system. However, making a permit rule just for the services you actually want to offer will go a lot further. You may still have to deal with a few bad actors, but the numbers will be far fewer, and your odds of denying legitimate access go way down.

And yes, I’m quite aware that EVERYTHING I’ve written is from the perspective of an armchair general. I encourage people more invested to read what I’ve written, ask questions if that helps you understand, and then ignore everything I’ve said entirely because I’m probably an un-nuanced moron speaking about things I don’t understand. As an aside, the implementation details and governance issues can’t be overlooked in an actual deployment of such a community. I have thoughts about how one might create a useful system of governance for an opt-in, moderation contract based fedi-alternative built on ActivityPub and both extant FEs and modified BEs, but I have neither the influence nor will to spend the effort to build that community. So I’ll leave that for people more invested and capable than I.

Do you think there's a big market for people who want to be friends with (scheduled kissing) benefits?I wanna play minecraft together while we makeout with you in my lap, but only on Tuesdays and Saturdays at the regularly scheduled date time. The rest of the time we can chat on Discord or whatever, but I need you to go home and sleep in your own bed. I've got raids to run and work to do, and my autism/introversion REALLY needs you to go home at the end of the day.

@susie Right? "So, that was fun, but the date ended at 11pm, so I don't care if you go home, you just can't stay here." turns out to make a lot of people surprisingly fussy. From what I can tell it's not surprising to most people, but to me it seems odd that after a half dozen hours of hanging out, not wanting to be overly hot and uncomfortable in a bed, and to get some quiet time to myself seems like and odd thing to find surprising.

Psst! Hey! Ya, you! :ablobcatwave:Thanks for stopping by!So, I should probably tell you about myself. I'm a Sagittarius and I like long walks on the beach and...What? It's not a video dating profile? We stopped doing video dating over 20 years ago? Huh.Ummm... Well, then what to say... I guess what you need to know is that I'm a computer engineer (it's like an electrical engineer, except that I can actually program) and that I have made a hobby of collecting hobbies and not maintaining proper eye contact. Some of my favorites include playing video games, reading manga, hiking, drawing, writing software, and consuming an absolutely unreasonable amount of caffeine. My activity here tends to be in spurts. Sometimes I lurk, sometimes I'm deeply interactive, sometimes all I do is boost a ton of art. If you don't see or hear from me for a while, don't fret; that's perfectly normal. I'll be back in a few months to pick up where I left off once my confidence returns and my brain is playing nice again. So sit back, crack open a cool juice box, relax, and enjoy the show (Or not. I'm not the boss of you.):blobcatsip:

@ilja @enigmatico Huh... Well, that'll be *exciting*. I imagine the first few days (maybe hours) are gonna be chaos. I love this place, but it is pretty grossly incompatible with ad placement.Though if you take his statement as being exact, that looks like outbound federation only, which would actually make more sense, though it would be less useful.Anyway, thanks for letting me know! My google searches were coming up with cold articles.

Kurzgesagt has an interesting video asking the question of whether you are ethically able to decide if your decedents should be required to grow up on a generation ship destined for a distant star. But what amuses me the most about that is that the ethical dilemma posed by that is exactly the same dilemma posed by asking if you should require someone to grow up on Earth too.At the end of the day no one chooses to be born, and the circumstances of their birth are 100% out of your control. Should rich people have kids knowing that their child will have to grow up with the concerns of the rich? What about the poor? What about people in difficult climates, or by parents with heritable diseases?Ya. That whole discussion is difficult. And for that reason Western culture has largely settled on “you do you, and decide what you’re going to do for yourself and whether you think it’s cool for you to have kids given your context. The rest of us are gonna keep our damn mouths shut lest we wander haphazardly into eugenics.”

Note to self: I need to switch to a laptop for work. My desktop draws something like 200 watts while idle, and when I’m working, I basically use my tower like a dumb terminal.Spending the money, grid capacity, and CO2 emissions to keep a near top-end gaming tower online seems like a misuse of our resources as a world knowing that I can (and have) gotten away with an android tablet and an extra monitor.:ablobcatsweatsip:

@susie According to a clamp on ammeter, a Kill-A-Watt, and my UPS' power meter, sadly.Though it's worth noting that "idle" here means "not asking for it to bring heavy resources to bear", not "sitting at a blinking cursor". This means having a VS Code window open and a web page up with some documentation. It also includes two monitors, one VR lighthouse, and a pair of speaker.... Actually I just checked again, and since turning the clock down 200MHz and changing the power limit from 4096W to 235W on the CPU, (to fix the 13900KF meltdown issue from Intel) I'm reading 168W with just this page open. Playing a video has come down from nearly 300W to be merely 192W, which is nice.(It does 330W right now under gaming loads, that but's to be expected. And that's down from 425W. Damn that bug was serious.)

I'd never setup a WEBTOON account before, but seriously? 16 character password MAX and no 2FA?You can spend real money on this website, and some artists make their entire living off it. That is NOT resilient enough AT ALL:blobcatgooglycry:
