@drgeraint I guess it makes sense that domestic sporting success in such an international event would have such an effect. The French world cup win in 1998 played a significant part in the defeat of Jean-Marie Le Pen by demonstrating a team with a large proportion of players from migrant families could win, especially when Le Penn effectively said in a televised interview that they had no chance because of all the black players in the team.

@tregeagle @ascentale @bobjonkman @rasterweb @bikenite as a kid, my friends nicknamed the club run ride leader's winter bike "trusty rusty" (his nickname was captain club run)My bike of the time was nicknamed "ten ton tessie" because it was a gas pipe special. Got me around though until I got a proper lightweight for my birthday.

@tregeagle @MartyCormack @ascentale @rowmyboat @bikenite tubeless are absolutely brilliant right up until they aren't and become a complete nightmare.Downsides people don't mention:1. Gunk dries out eventually (6-12 months usually) which means a trip to the bike shop or gunk on the garage floor. 2. When a thorn makes a hole and it seals, you still have a thorn. It's then prone to leaking when the gunk dries out, so you're walking home1/n

@tregeagle @MartyCormack @ascentale @rowmyboat @bikenite3. You need air pressure in the tube to seal well, so if it's completely flat and it's a big hole, you often can't get air in quick enough on the roadside, so you're walking home.4. If it's a big hole that doesn't seal, you can put a tube in, but don't forget all those sealed thorns which are waiting to pierce your new tube. Miss one and you're walking home5. The rim tape is a weak link. Install it wrong and it'll slowly leak.2/2

@tregeagle @MartyCormack @ascentale @rowmyboat @bikeniteI subscribe to the Schwalbe Marathon Plus or Continental Ride Tour club - overkill on tyre durability so you don't get punctures at a slightly (well quite large) weight penalty

@tregeagle @MartyCormack @ascentale @rowmyboat @bikeniteI can't be arsed with the hassle of tubeless and never had a problem with a spare tube (only needed 3 in the last 30 years - one was my fault (pinch flat due to under inflation), one was for a "slime" inner tube where the seam split (faulty tube) and the last was shit WTB Resolute tyres.A friend at my club has had 5 punctures spewing sealant resulting in 3 train rides home in the last few yrs. Not a good strike rate imho.
