@ExperimentVI'm pretty sure we *were* kids when we started talking like that... Maybe we should ask the kids to teach us!@lain

The "non-commercial" (NC) option in the Creative Commons suite of licenses introduces more confusion than it eliminates. I wrote a short essay to sum up the main problem, as I see it. This core problem can get lost in discussion of more technical issues. I'm hoping this short statement will be useful to share with well-intentioned copyright owners considering NC. But this "first draft" could probably use your edits or comments! https://freedomdefined.org/The_non-commercial_provision_obfuscates_intent

@atomicpoet @me Can you say more about this? What aspects of how email evolved are the problems you think are avoidable?

@atomicpoet @me Ah, that makes good sense. It seems to me like *some* of that is already addressed by Mastodon's more modern architecture - it was designed to be pretty easy to set up and run a server from the beginning, in recent years. Email has a lot of idiosyncracies that were set many decades ago and hard to migrate away from. But, I imagine a lot of it goes beyond software design too, and I guess that's what you're referencing?

@textfiles I've been enjoying the Archive's collection of BBC radio dramas lately. This looks like a great next step.

@mergerson It is definitely disturbing (worse than disturbing) and needs to be addressed. But also, it's crucial to think about structure if we're going to do something about it. If a new sports fan experiences abuse by a concession stand and complains to the referee, they're right to complain, but might have trouble getting a good outcome... (cont'd)

@mergerson In this case, the "app" (which you mention in your post) probably has nothing to do with it. I'm not sure which of the many apps you're using, but I think they all function about the same. Neither does the "platform" in an immediate sense - one of the main features is that there IS no central platform, only a set of protocols. The problem surely lies in the instance (cont'd)

@mergerson ...which is basically the small group of people one chose to trust when signing up. I think better guidance is the key:1. How to choose an instance to begin with2. How to deal with poor moderation in your instance if it happens3. How to move to a different one if it seems beyond one's means to address

@mergerson Regardless, I fully agree that lecturing people who have been abused is never a good approach, nor is downplaying the abuse

@mergerson But also, I think your post gets at a really important moral question, i.e. it it OK to use protocols that permit people to be abusive in the corners they run? And I'm not sure. If the alternative is letting corporate owners make broad brush decisions, I think federated is better. But if I was totally sure, I'd be wrong. It's probably the most important question re: Mastodon's future/value.
