@otyugh @herhandsmyhands In one of the Discworld novels, some clever engineers invent mechanised, high-speed semaphore, & part of the semaphore operator’s meta information coding are letter flags:G : Send the message onward (to next tower)N : Do not log message (typically for routine overhead metainfo)U : Turn message around at end of line (typically “keep alive”)Along with the notion that one does not die while their memory is spoken of —

@alexhammy209 @t @dansinker “most people” have built their lives on the ability to trust that they can delegate the task of regulation and moderation to specialists. That falls apart when there’s no ability to claw back regulation and moderation from specialists in subverting proper regulation and moderation — or even an awareness that they’re being subverted, or that reform is necessary.

“Elon Musk should pay taxes” now considered by Twitter T&S to be hate speech. Or, Elon has his hands on the levers directly

There is no rational evaluation of that statement that finds it to be hate speech. There is no responsible use of Twitter any longer

One of the witnesses just listed by Raskin is a representative of the Southern Baptist church. That five minutes of testimony is going to be a nauseating case of derailment, defense, dismissal, and denial

Segal’s testimony is concise and impactful. He’s making a good overview of the situation, hitting the points.

@vodamark @TJ @taylorlorenz a few years back there was a group that was spinning up distinct *domain names* and pointing them at the same server in an effort to evade a block; I never caught the back half of that incident so I don’t know how exactly they’d mitigate it, but it would likely generally parallel user ban evasion cold wars.

@TJ @vodamark @taylorlorenz Yes. Twitter’s “Only People Mentioned Can Reply”/“Only Followers Can Reply” was:1: developed to mitigate noise/spam/dog piling/harassment/protests without dedicating policy (& human labour for actioning) to AUP violations;2: needed a central technological access control system to enforce it.If it were written into the specification … it might not be honored by some instances, but that could be a defederation condition.

@TJ @vodamark @taylorlorenz ActivityPub (the protocol the Fediverse / mastodon is built on) has “Only Followers Can See” for individual items, which - combined with the ability to restrict your followers to only the accounts you approve - serves a similar anti-noise, anti-harassment purpose.One-(or Few)-to-Many, Replies Restricted (“broadcast” style), though …

@pthenq1 @TJ @vodamark @taylorlorenz There are a few use cases where it makes sense for someone to make publicly readable posts which have comments turned off. Example: the leader of a political party or country makes an announcement. Terrorists use the replies to deliver a bomb threat. The bomb threat causes a panic, leading to humans being injured or dying in a crush. Countering & preventing terrorist amplification is legitimate.

@pthenq1 @TJ @vodamark @taylorlorenz Everything open will be exploited for fun, politics, and profit; In an active crisis there is no real-time knowledge, only real-time information.Mastodon should be about knowledge. As more people join, its exploitability for (mis)information scales exponentially, and infrastructure which addresses that should be planned for. Thanks for coming to my ModX Talk

@h_albermann @hankteford @eirliani @austinkocher @Mastodon I volunteered to moderate on Reddit - helped to run r/AgainstHateSubreddits. I was doxxed, my life threatened, every conceivable harassment angle aimed at me. I’ve seen ISIL propaganda and worked to take down domestic terrorists, white supremacist groups, and sex traffickers.Asking volunteers to field any of that is unconscionable. Moderators need to be supported, not just thanked.

I cannot stress enough that organised media manipulators, harassers, & white supremacist orgs use flamebait, debate, flame wars, drama, arguments, outrage & tabloid gossip as part of their strategy.Amplifying them and assembling an audience for them is exactly what they want. They will pivot on that to multiply harms - at the low end of the harm scale, they’ll goat se the audience. At the high end: hundreds of people see revenge porn of a secondary target. Or worse.Squelch them, every time.

@karger @jeffjarvis @pensato @PBruce @craignewmark @JMMaok @futurebird @jayrosen_nyu @Zittrain the trust network for fact checkers as an aspect of moderation would require FB to navigate AOL Community Manager & Mavrix v LiveJournal precedents for volunteer vs labour & the “publisher” implications of “at the direction of the service” created by paid fact checkers suppressing user-created misinfo.Social media corps see that as a liability landmine.

@karger @jeffjarvis @pensato @PBruce @craignewmark @JMMaok @futurebird @jayrosen_nyu @Zittrain None of the social media corporations want to be the test case for “your AUP enforcement is biased against free speech / Republicans \ isn’t covered by Section 230’s language \ breaches your DMCA Safe Harbour \ makes you a publisher” litigation / legislation. Every aspect of moderation they can push off, outsource, or sidestep, they do.

So, the inner loop of “What the Heck is happening with Reddit?” is this:They appear to be getting all their ducks in a row to prepare for an IPO, which means shutting down all the 3rd parties that have (in Reddit’s view) been siphoning away advertisement eyeballs.ButReddit’s official app has been so garbage for so long for moderating, that many moderators relied on third party apps. For years. The changes also rugpulled many other community developed anti-abuse efforts. So, a boycott.

How Reddit’s CEO, Steve Huffman, handles his AMA tomorrow about the API changes etc, will likely determine whether Reddit has an actual future as a company, or finally undergoes complete trust thermocline inversion.Reddit was a loosely run party masquerading as a business for years; they did the absolute minimum of enforcing AUPs & regulating API use, & the community built necessary services out from that in an effort at mutual support. They’re pulling that ladder up, now, recklessly.
