For centuries, anyone who went against the church was exile/financially ruined at best, or killed at worse. Yet people question why a different understanding was never around before?I'm sure it was, but survivorship bias means you'll never know.

It can be seen just in the Catholic/Protestant divide. The caths claim that a single obscure verse gives them dominion over who enters heaven or hell. Luther, for all his faults, realized this wasn't so; that the RCC had suppressed the knowledge of scripture, and murdered people who dissented, for over a thousand years. And yet caths will say things like "Well it wouldn't have lasted for so long if God didn't want it to/didn't consider it His church."Or maybe God doesn't intercede like that. Maybe God allowed the children of Adam to reject him for a millennia before He flooded them. Maybe He let the children of Jacob whore with idols for a millennia before he sent them into captivity. Maybe your church is no different.

I found this interesting. Grammatically, Jesus is saying that those believing were doing so at the time he spoke those words. Therefore it cannot refer to people outside of those in Jerusalem, and the regions of Palestine He went.
