@Nonilex It must have been in the 70s debates over the death penalty that someone looked at historical data to assess how effective the death penalty was as a deterrent. (I think New York State data, back at least to the 30s.)Not only was there no evidence of a deterrent effect, murder rates spiked in the aftermath of an execution.

@Nonilex One of the things I liked about the #GreenNewDeal framework is that it showed how and what we need to do to address the #ClimateCrisis, which of necessity integrated addressing the problems of poverty into the overall strategy.#ClimatAction requires a healthy, educated and engaged workforce. That means we need to ensure education, healthcare, housing, food are accessible to all. That means a functioning infrastructure - mobility, energy, communications - so people can do the work. And that makes it easier to address a range of problems.It all ties together. Not everyone needs to work on a climate specific action, we can do more than just walk and chew gum at the same time.

@futurebird As of this post, I'm in the privileged bubble where I am not aware of any of my friends/family needing SNAP.And, as I take the bus from the morning farmers market past a food pantry distribution point, I am very aware of how many cannot afford sufficient food on their income.As I walk past the community center providing seniors free lunches, I am very aware of the need.And if I lived in the suburbs, or drove everywhere, I probably wouldn't see the reality so many struggle with.

@futurebird wow. That linoleum pattern ( different colors, though) was in the kitchen of my family home from 1968 until 2024 (and if the house hadn't been sold it would still be there. Incredibly durable.
