I find it interesting that consumers are increasingly revolting from tips-based compensation while simultaneously more of the online services I use are skipping fees and rely on a donation system.

It has been difficult to capture on film all four osprey family members together but last night after the heavy storm the security camera caught this. That is the father or the mother bringing a fish to feed the chicks. He always lands on the perch, never the best, when bringing food. Only after he is satisfied that it is safe, he enters the nest. He will not enter the nest with food if people are around this section of beach. We posted signs to warn visitors to stay away. I am happy to see both chicks looking relatively similar. One was significantly smaller than the other, possibly because of later hatch date or not as healthy. But they look healthy now. This is our newest security camera, an outdoor telephoto, and I am just testing it on the osprey nest for now. Public livestream access is available, but you must set up the Wyze app on your device. #osprey #sustainability

@barb Encouraging. Voter apathy let this happen across the nation. Only activism will reverse it.

Cape May County Board of Commissioners embarrassed themselves over the past few months in actions taken to oppose the installation of wind energy. First, they were silent in the years when public input was open into the painstaking careful study, planning and permiting of wind energy. Nothing in national and state government energy policy happens quickly, and there were many opportunities for the county government to be involved. Now they appear to be influenced by misinformation spread on social media, rather than the reports of any actual experts. That’s not the way government is supposed to work. The county government has reportedly even given propaganda, misinformation, or irrelevant citations to reporters investigating the topic. Several comments by commissioners quoted in the news are bizarre and nonsensical. One commissioner said he supported “land-based offshore” wind that obviously is not a possible concept. It is unclear whether the county officials lack the ability to discern quality of information influencing they opinions or whether they are intentionally avoiding taking advice from qualified professsionals. One reporter noted that the county failed to make a single valid point that he could cover in his article. Another reporter noted that the opposition seems to be politically driven fear, not facts. While legal, scientific and economic data to predict the actual future effects of wind power here is scarce, for obvious reasons, the limited credible information we have indicates the opposite of what the commissioners are saying. We have another ‘facts vs Fox News’ scenario. It is disturbing to me that my former residence’s governing body has abandoned the standards and decision making processes that we expect in favor of embracing this type of misinformation on the basis that this is what the loudest partisan voters want. We expect better from our county government. Leave your personal biases at home and make decisions within the systems established under the law.

@breadandcircuses I don’t see that happening in my scope. I see young people giving up cars for Uber and people who need vehicles, like my rural businesses switching to electric trucks, tractors and boats.

Which of our esteemed Republican Party leaders are looking forward to attending the big Arizona primary election rally this month headlined by racist, misogenist, antisemite, holocost denying Nick Cuentes and crazy convicted criminal QAnon Shamon Jacob Chansley?

Maybe it’s just my simple country boy economics, but when there is a wait time for your entertainment product, and your customers are willing to stand in the extreme heat for it again and again, your pricing is still way too low. (Graph from today’s WSJ)

Political violenceThere are a number of national headline news stories where complaints by a vindictive right wing politician resulted in other right wing extremists making threats targeting or taking action to hurt an innocent victim. These problems are not limited to headline news. It’s been 18 years since I started reporting death threats received to NJSP and about 15 years since a grand jury voted to indict a politician for his role in an attempted assassination plot. A neighbor admitted to telling the politician that he would “take care of it” after I told the politician that he was legally in the wrong. The guy deliberately hit me with his truck while I was gardening in my front yard in an attempt at vengeance. As I laid on the road, he drove away yelling out the window in front of witnesses “What did you think would happen for fucking with (politician)!”. Both the politician and the attacker fled the state shortly afterward to avoid prosecution. Unlike the headline news stories, our local prosecutors did not take extraordinary measures to pursue justice. I spent years in recovery treatment from disabling injuries and still deal with the physical effects of that attack.I have no way of knowing how often this type of political violence happens. I only know that this type of crime is not limited to national headline news.

“I don't know how you can be a leader and not be completely accessible to your people” - Jamie Dimon. Most business leaders seem to have figured out how leadership works with a life balance significantly less than being complete assessible. Dimon’s attitude seems to be an outdated belief carried over from the days when I was in business school. We have long since proved this belief incorrect.

@clive I never imagined myself as a truck person but I am now living in rural lowland and operate a marina side business with two old trucks. Friends tell me the old trucks are better than the new ones for my purposes.

This clipping comes from yesterday’s Wall Street Journal. In an insane world where voters in swing states speak to pollsters about the price of cat food as a factor in their dissatisfaction of the President, I still think that in a head-to-head runoff, more will make the sane choice.

Drought:It is raining now. Forecast says 1/3" by daylight. This drought, more than any other major current event, calls my attention to the changing role of mainstream media and alternate sources of information. Fortunately, this is a rare example where misinformation and conspiracy theories apparently have not caused damage. But the drought is a bigger deal than most of us realize, escaping almost everyone's attention.

@magicalthinking yes, our marina business has a station and is a paid subscriber. I haven't found it particularly useful except for live updates on conditions. I viewed it before writing that post but actually took my info from another site. Maybe i need to learn more, or possibly an older ipad/browser limitation issue.

“Ignorance is strength”.-George OrwellI am listening to Nexus by Yuval Noah Harare. The subtitle is “A Brief History of Information Networks from the Stone Age to AI”. This suggests that the less informed or aware the population is, the more powerful the ruling party becomes.  #AI#SocialMedia

Over the weekend I had a conversation with a normally quiet and reserved U.S. Attorney. With very little prompting, he launched into an emotional rant about the incompetence of his office's new leadership under this administration. He used examples of basic things like understanding the meaning of words, and how to spell a person's name, write a letter, or file a court motion. I recalled making similar observations from my brief outsider assessment of the incompetencies of Pam Bondi years ago. Even though we were outdoors, I was surprised that he was willing to make such statements in a non-secure location.
