Wow. Promoting an alternative social media platform is now openly against the Twitter Rules. https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/social-platforms-policy

@stux A good case for using a password manager with autofill. It won't autofill if the URL is wrong.

@grammargirl @dangillmor @atomicpoet @jeffjarvis It really shows that a lot of journalists and media outlets only care about profit over truth, freedom and ethics.

@BenjaminNelan @troed @aral @Gargron It's exactly what the signup process for Matrix is like where the default server is matrix.org.

@BenjaminNelan @troed @aral @Gargron @pixelfed True, I personally use the Mozilla (chat.mozilla.org) homeserver. I think on Mastodon the biggest UX issue is those not knowing what server to choose when signing up, so presenting a default/fallback option while displaying other good options to at least pique enough interest and make users aware is the best way to go.

@BenjaminNelan @troed @aral @Gargron @pixelfed So instead of being lost on 'here are tens of different servers to choose from before you join' it would instead be 'here is the main server and all you have to do is click join, but there are some good other options here if you'd like'

@atomicpoet Some people are shocked that an open protocol is.. open, exactly as it was intended to be. No one would have seen it coming, but I predict that Meta will lead the way and champion decentralized and federated social media. People can block Meta, but Meta and its cluster of federated servers (which will be the majority) will actually be what will become known in the mainstream as the 'fediverse'. Otherwise, you're effectively not really on the fediverse.

@atomicpoet Much like the web, Meta will be a huge player. However, it will never be able to dictate the fediverse, for the same reason it's able to freely join it – it's an open protocol. There are far too many players involved in addition to companies (like Mozilla) which will join in huge numbers. You will have your whales in the network but there's also thousands of fish that collectively have an equal amount of sway.

@atomicpoet A lot of the Meta doom and gloom is coming from the perspective of those looking at Meta vs. the small fediverse bubble that currently exists. They are not looking at what the reality is going to be after competing company A, company B, company C etc. all inevitably follow and join. It's basically just going to become HTTP but on a social scale. Will be impossible to have a dominant player.

Meta joining the fediverse:✅ Access to a ton of free and diverse content, without having to deal with the legal responsibilities of hosting it or platforming problematic people✅ Skirts antitrust legislation by pointing to the freedom of users to migrate elsewhere, "it's an open network"✅ Meta users still get to enjoy having their data exploited and eyeballs monetized✅ We get to interact with them from Mastodon without getting our data exploited and eyeballs monetizedWin for everyone.

@realcaseyrollins That is true. Things aren't always black or white. Our interests don't necessarily have to be at odds with Meta – we can both benefit at the same time. It's a symbiotic relationship. Meta will not back out on federation; it's their main goal, front and center on Threads, and will guarantee the death of Twitter. If they don't (won't happen), they'll have a huge monopoly over the social space (4 platforms) and will almost certainly be broken up by regulators.

@grammargirl By far the biggest and most tragic loss for the English language is the word 'potion'. Sounds magical, mysterious and enchanting.'Syrup' will never be the same.

Mastodon has a CSAM problem because anyone can independently set up and host their own server and platform. This is not a problem that's unique to Mastodon and is a problem with the open web, which the fediverse is part of. Just like encrypted messaging or privacy in general, there are always bad actors that will abuse the freedom. It must be actively fought, but what I find interesting is how the media and elite weaponize children whenever it suits their interests.

While it is not unique to Mastodon, it does not mean that Mastodon can't do more to help fight against it. Most servers block problematic servers, but there is always a chance that this type of content may get exposure. More moderation tools and filters can be developed and there's also good potential for AI here if applied thoughtfully and properly (such as auto flagging suspected material for mod review).

"The best way to spot an idiot? Look for the person who is cruel. The kindest person in the room is often the smartest. Empathy and compassion are evolved states of being."This is the speech of the year. I've always found it remarkable how easy it is to hate – it's a primal emotion that often comes from ignorance and requires no intellectual effort.
