Often it’s a waste of time to respond to bad faith inquiries, but the bullshit industrial complex relies on non-response to say “DiResta declined to respond!” &create impression of guilt. Then comes innuendo: Thacker claims a company I left in early 2019 had sketchy DoD contracts & is implying I did too. Whether they did, whether I had anything to do with it, is irrelevant – the MO is to state two things and let the audience intuit the connection they want to believe. So here was my response

🧵 I wrote ab the “is Signal secure?” manufactroversy on X. The Guardian wanted an explainer on why Elon & Jack were “concerned” about Signal. The answer, though, has nothing to do w/Signal’s product. It was part of an extended fight over whether woke NPR should be defunded & the CEO fired. Why? It would be novel and quaint at this point for a culture war skirmish to NOT devolve into some insane conspiracy theory. Arguing ab left-leaning bias & calls to “Defund NPR” have happened for years. Now, we get stuff like “actually the CEO is a deep state color revolutionary ushering in regime change in America” — pure innuendo presented as if it’s a serious argument. And it gets reach because influencers with massive followings boost it. We aren’t arguing within shared reality.

I wrote a book about this. It’s out in 3 weeks (preorders help!). I don’t think there’s a point in playing whack-a-mole trying to refute specific innuendo. The goalposts move; the target can rarely convince true believers. People who are familiar w/the immediate issue - in this case the relative security of Signal and Telegram - should speak up to clarify for bystanders, but explaining HOW smears work is key bc the playbook repeats.https://www.amazon.com/dp/1541703375

Some left bad reviews, others upvoted them 80+ times. “Dunk on DiResta" — her allies at Langley are controlling the narrative! (Also dunk on Fauci while you're at it.)This is the asymmetry of passion in action... these groups enthusiastically brigade their enemies while it's v hard to get normal folks to counterspeak or act

They see this as an existential war. Their heroes told them I’m “CIA Renee” - a villain - and this gives them the chance to be part of the exciting project of taking me down. It’s activism to them. They aren’t interested in reading the book, they know it’s lies because their hero says it’s a “disinformation campaign” against him.Support in these cases is almost always private. Which is nice, but then it isn’t also shaping public perception. The tactics continue to work.
