@textfiles Do they know how half life works? If it is actually 2 days then you'd expect it to be detectable for something like a month.

@penguin42 @tedchoward I wouldn't expect C2 or C4 to be there either.

@futurebird I'm not so sure that there is actually a reformist path to fixing the US. You would ask congress to make illegal what every member has been doing?And don't forget:3. The press, largely controlled by the same people who buy congress, and none of them care more about the truth than how many ads they can sell. Trump would never have been anywhere in politics if the press had done their duty.

@futurebird @mekkaokereke It is stories like these that make me wonder about the exact stories behind all those cops killed "in the line of service". What exactly is the ratio between cops that go down fighting an active terrorist, and cops that mismanage a benign situation so badly that they manage to trigger a fight or flight response in someone who happened to have a gun?

@mekkaokereke @futurebird Yes, but I still think it is worth taking a closer look at the deaths that do happen. Especially because violence begets violence, and I'd wager that the situations where cops get shot look a lot like the situations where civilians get shot.Having some statistical and anecdotal evidence that keeping their gun holstered and being nice to people is actually a really good safety measure for cops, would be nice.

@snarkweek @petergleick My napkin maths got to 650000 km^2, which is still less than 0.5% of the Earth's total land area.

@futurebird So, I'm going to try to not make this weird, but I'll choose the topic for maximum likelihood of failure.You know people saying how everyone can learn to do this or that, all it takes is practice? Well it is wrong, the truth is that anyone can practice and get better, but the return on that practice and the level where an individual top out vary immensely between people. This is true for both physical and mental abilities.

@futurebird Indeed, it is complicated, and every sport/field has its own quirks.I'll add that quite often you don't need to reach your peak to realise that this is definitely not the sport where you are going to be world champion.On the other hand if you do find yourself doing solidly better than the average practitioner, but don't quite see how you would close the gap to the best, a professional training regime may be the answer.
