Hey this is your daily reminder that Windows sucks. So we have this pipeline thing at work that compiles the source every time we push, y'know? And we have it running on, like, the 3 major platforms (Linux, macOS, and Windows) ...Guess which one always breaks because we made the big mistake of... *gasp* stopping a running job? (Or just because it's not in a good mood really)Don't use Windows.Don't use Windows for anything. And especially don't use Windows for anything professional.

@edgren Windows are great for RR (Real Reality™), you should open them more often 🙃

@edgren The headset is lighter, resolution is higher, haptic feedback is better, and cherry on the cake, you get to experience a whole new sense: smell!

@edgren Quite a lot actually.Sport sims mostly. (Handball, hockey, archery, cycling, base jumping... you name it) Motorsports are a bit too extreme for me, but truck simulators are OK.Everything else is either underwhelming or extremely expensive.Oh except for a certain kind of adult games. You need one (or more) partner (and I advise you choose them wisely) but it's really the best.

I have a heterogeneous collection of music files (.wav, .ogg, .mp3), and I'd like to export all their metadata as e.g. a csvHow would you do it?I really only care about <artist> - <name> but it would be nice to have everything else.#FediOverflow #AskFedi

I'm guessing the solution would probably be CLI-based, but if a GUI tool does the job, I'm taking it.Forgot to mention, but I'm talking about Linux tools of course

@SirVo No, mp3info only works on mp3 files (or technically files with ID3 tags)

#ShowerThought It doesn't matter how slow or inefficient a processor is, if you're using it for heating.Instead of throwing them away, we could reuse all the old computers that are now "obsolete" for modern use cases by turning them into heaters that are also useful for distributed computing. I'm thinking of projects like #boinc to help scientific research. (and no, definitely *NOT* crypto, though I wouldn't know how to stop people from doing that.)

Tangentially related: I'm baffled at how some people clearly lack some education, yet sound so sure of themselves.I was browsing the interwebz for like minded people (ofc I wouldn't be the first to think of this), and I stumbled upon this comment:> Using a PC as a space heater would be *very* inefficient.I'll spare you the details, but the reasoning goes like this:Something built to produce heat should be more efficient at heating than something that produces heat as a side-effect

Which sounds almost, and could even be true depending on how you frame "efficient".But when shown a benchmark comparing heat output of a 1kW heater vs a 1kW gaming rig, that guy was mind blown... at how "inefficient" the PC components must be! (For not using that energy for computation)For the record, that benchmark essentially showed the same curve for both. (I don't know whether I'm actually more baffled that someone even went through the effort of benchmarking this)

So I'm not pointing fingers, saying "haha look that idiot doesn't know thermodynamics", I just want to underline how *sure* of himself he was. It's okay to not know, and it's okay to be wrong (actually, someone explained everything to him, and he didn't argue, he was just very surprised), but you have to know the limits of your knowledge. This was on a tech forum, that guy is a techie, he could have been taken for an authoritative figure.

Let's take another tangent from that tangent shall we?I'm glad I know enough of physics to navigate my way in a world of misinformation. As a general rule, always being curious, and always questioning the things you see or hear, and more importantly the things you say, helps you think critically.

For example there was a time I was against nuclear energy. Period. Now, while I still believe nuclear waste *is a real problem*. I have learned to balance that against the more imminent problem of climate change and carbon emissions. And to see through the lies of greener than thou renewables that also have short lifetimes and non-existent recycling solutions. And I dismiss electric cars for bikes and trains, etc. etc.
