Why do all the threads I see with multiple replies just have "1+" near the reply button instead of an actual number? Is this a purposeful feature to keep people from seeking serotonin from drama threads with lots of replies? If it is, I am **in love** with this platform already.

@marcelo I think it's specifically designed to prevent snowballing/dogpiling/drama, which are the biggest, most rotten problems with Twitter. I think it's amazing if it's on purpose. No quote retweets either, for the same reason.

@sjw @marcelo I don't get it, but I'm still cackling. 😂 I honestly don't really understand how this stuff works yet. Mastodon and Pleroma are both software for interacting with these communications servers or something? Pleroma shows the reply numbers? I actually prefer not to see them. I don't love the snowballing effect of social media, honestly!

@sjw @marcelo Nice, thank you. I've been wondering about this shit for years, but never bothered looking. To be clear, I'm not an "Elon is evil!!!" refugee... I just figured I should do my part to try making this open source stuff more popular while it feels like people are actually open to looking at it for a change. I think decentralized internet/communication is important. ❤️ 💪

@marcelo Twitter's BUILT for drama, hahah. If that's what you're looking for, Twitter's definitely the place! 😂 ❤️ I'll be keeping my Twitter account too, but I think I'm gonna really like Mastodon as a quieter, slower alternative. I really like how the Local feed shows all the gamedev stuff on the server I signed up for. Really cool.

@sjw@bae.st @marcelo @sjw@skippers-bin.com I am a (crappy) computer programmer and semi-computer literate, so I vaguely figured most of this, but thank you for the clarification; it's definitely true that everyone is just calling the Fediverse "Mastodon" outside of the Fediverse, which is confusing. So the Fediverse is just... a collection of sites/servers with shared communication protocols?Like I said, I've been wanting to check this stuff out for years now, and now felt like the time. Appreciate the education.

@sjw @marcelo Thanks for the info. I was literally, just a few days ago, lamenting that the "old internet" of the late 90s/early 00s was dead, and that the internet completely sucked and was run by like three websites now. I came here to try out a new social media platform, but it's starting to feel like maybe I found part of the old internet, too. I'm legitimately hyped right now, hahah.

@freemo @stux I came over with a bunch of gamedev friends, so I think I'll stay for now because I generally like the community and vibe here, but thanks for running an actual free-speech server. I think letting the user decide is the best way to run things. 👍 I think I'll probably spin my own gamedev/art focused one at some point, too. 💪
