@clive I enjoy reading ALT text which can help me make sense of images and work out what the poster felt was important. For me ALT text writing really makes me think about an image or video, what is important, what do I think is important. On an inclusive WhatsApp group, a friend asked others to ALT his post as he couldn't at the time. 2 of us ALT texted it and and clicked send close together - it was fascinating to compare our ALT texts.

@clive It was completely spontaneous. I'm neurotypical, the other person who I don't know very well is autistic. It was a nice chance to see how the other thinks. It also makes me think of #AgainstAccess by deafblind poet John Lee Clark https://audio.mcsweeneys.net/transcripts/against_access.html and how the human-view is sometimes better than this sterile "neutral" view which can never be unbiased. Part of our own ALT text is part of our social media practice; as much our own as our words and other styles.

ICQ vs Teams. So very true. I'm probably going to have to get a new work computer with days of reconfig cos so much is not saved properly in our profiles cos Teams just Cannot Cope and is eating 97% of the RAM constantly even when not in a video call. Image now ALT texted. I thought it was described but re-seeing my boost in timeline the image wasn't described, so can only assume I was having a stupid last night and you get this post instead.

@neil @revk @penguin42 @TimWardCam I also snarkily wonder about enforcement given what a toothless waste of space the ICO is. Worst they'd do is demand a takedown and "damage" would be done...

@fsf I have Oticon hearing aids; the Android app is worse than useless cos it is so slow that I can't get it open and changing in a usable timeframe. I am already cranky that it's all Bluetooth (a crap and unreliable protocol) which at best is slow, at worst doesn't-connect, rather than decent wires which Just Worked. Also hearing aids now have 1 button for multiple functions which is a UI nightmare. Lots of issues about user control and manufacturer attitudes to usability/accessibility.

@irina @cassolotl Add to all of this, pockets! Trousers for women-shaped-people and dresses rarely have pockets or decent pockets...Exceptions are AlpKit's jeans which annoyingly have a too low waistline for my comfort.

@LordWoolamaloo That's even funnier than "Enid Blyton in Scotland" which was my friend's dad's completely innocent descriptor of her.

@futurebird I've run very grassroots community events where we had a mix of "feel free to bring your own" "bring&share" (with ingredient lists requested) and provided bought food where kept the food packaging with ingredients was kept WITH each item (till it was empty) and I had a loose vegetarian/vegan/meat&fish separation. We had signs and announcements asking people NOT to cross-contaminate food. Some folk still couldn't risk that but bought their own.

My friend @bright_helpings is resharing the #CanHelpWith hashtag here with skills-share he can offer within his communities. https://disabled.social/@bright_helpings@mspsocial.net/113437407469531494This is part of a fightback against shit-governments anywhere, people get together, build and sustain communities and help one another, especially marginalised members.

@futurebird I may notice, but I also know there's huge variation in how good people are at name-memory or face-recognition or whatever. I'm deaf, I'm poor at auditory only name memory. If I see a name written and associated with the face, I will remember the name very well. I hope we can move to an acceptance that name/face/other memory is variable and it's OK to say "Remind me of your name" and that not be a shameful thing to ask.

A friend works for a public body that announced that trans folk can't use the correct loos/facilities anymore. The staff LGBTQ network had been consulted then ignored, so they issued a statement saying so.There has been SO much kick off in just 2 days by general staff that the organisation is backtracking. Kicking Off works. Especially if it is done collectively and very loudly! If your work/service does this, challenge it and get as many people as possible to challenge too.

@futurebird Just returned a bath to a bathless bathroom (a crappy cheapo walk-in-ish) shower conversion for the previous elderly owner). It isn't a very long bath and our shower also installed for @kim isn't very tall but we tried to rate it for "our shortest friend" to our "tallest friend". Tall friend may have to crouch a bit.

RE: https://mas.to/@kityates/116070775971575940These measles outbreaks are REALLY BAD news. Measles is a horrible disease with potential for very nasty outcomes long term. I honestly feel quite hardline about it. If you don't have a measles vaccination (unless legit health-exempt), you shouldn't go anywhere in public. Cos your choices don't just affect you/your children, but affect others, who might not be able to get vaccines. Screw Andrew Wakefield and the MASSIVE harm he played a huge part in.

My mum was a nurse in the 70s and she did a stint on a measles encephalitis ward (encephalitis means inflammation of the brain, and it is BAD BAD NEWS). Many of the children on that ward would either die or have brain damage for life.Measles wipes out the immune system, trashing previous immunity. There also seem to be post-measles effects that can crop up years after infection. Those of us who got access to vaccines in the 80s onwards are LUCKY.

Cos of my disabilities, medics were reluctant to give me my infancy vaccines. My nurse/midwife mother was not having me unvaccinated, so she argued back and said vaccine risk was lower than disease risk. I was vaccinated. As soon as MMR was available in the UK, my mum chased various medics to get me given it. I am already deaf, she was not risking measles effects on top. Measles is scarily infectious, R of 19 or something and lingers for ages.
