@SecurityWriter Maybe 10 years ago now, our public library switched at least their public facing computers (the ones where you do catalog searches and such) to Linux. I thought it was brilliant. They already have to hire an IT guy and now they could save all the MS fees.Never could figure out why more organizations didn't follow suit.

@BeAware @tom Actually, I was going to suggest social.vivaldi.net 😃 I am thinking they are pretty committed and it will be stable for quite some time.

So, the other day #Twitch (which I have used to watch #MST3K and #Rifftrax ) started slamming #ads. A four ad block before the content started and the usual completely out of context slicing ads into the middle of scenes. Kinda took the fun out of things, but hey, I understand this stuff costs money.Today they are advertising an "Ad Free" tier. Which in my experience means that the ads will get more and more numerous and intrusive until you scream for mercy and pay them directly.I uninstalled the app. I'll miss it, but not that much.

@futurebird My small contribution to this is to use the shopping mall analogy. Some people (including the designers of the mall concept) said that the mall was the "new public square," because "everyone" could go there. But it just wasn't true. The mall was private property and reserved the right to encourage or suppress activities there.Xhitter, Facebook, etc. are "malls." Sure "everyone" can use them, but in the end they are private property under the control of their owners.Someone who wants to communicate with the public should either use a true public square. Or at the very least use a method of communication that they own.In a wonderful way, the Fediverse is both. They can own their own server(s) and communicate freely with others.

@futurebird Thank you for sharing this. I have a somewhat similar experience (from the other side.) My parents, after having 4 kids of their own, adopted a mixed race Black child. We were definitely suburbanites and I saw many situations such as yours over the years. But one totally escaped my notice. For over 30 years my dad and his brother had cut off communications. Dad never said why and although the subject came up from time to time, it just never occurred to me.When their mother died, they finally started some communication then. It was then that my dad told me that the rift was over his brother's reaction to the adoption of my sister (which I can imagine as my uncle was an overall asshole anyway.) My sister was 6 months old when she was adopted. I still find it hard to fathom this kind of hatred, even though I can clearly see that it exists.

OK one more thing...Further proof it is the racism here in Wisconsin.Looks like Tammy Baldwin is going to retain her Senate seat by some 25,000 votes. Trump carried the state.Which says to me that 25K people here in WI are perfectly fine voting for a white, openly bisexual woman, but not a Black woman. You cannot tell me there is any difference in competence or policy positions between Harris and Baldwin. It sure looks like racism to me.This whole election looks to me like "Urban Renewal" in the 1960s. After working in factories for 2 decades starting in WWII Black people starting buying houses. White people left in droves. After the while folks left, they made sure to "get rid of the eyesores" (Black people's neighborhoods) that remained in the cities. They would talk about "economic development" and "revitalization" but underneath it was just pure, ugly racism. That's what drove this election. Not money, not campaign ad spending, not the economy. Just pure racism (by which I include all other "divisions," immigrants, Muslims, LGTBQ+, sexism, etc.)#uspol #election

@Nonilex I am sure the companies recognize a political football when they see one. If one administration can put the football down, another can yank it away, Lucy and Charlie Brown style. Hard to run a business that way. Also, localities now understand that mining ain't so great for the local economy. It is mostly mechanized and uses a lot of transient labor that brings its own problems. Tourism is much better at providing local jobs that actually provide community support.Surprisingly, the economic model of the 1880s doesn't work so good any more.

@Nonilex And here is the thing as far as I can see.Obviously Ford is an American company. Ford's management moved production to Mexico (or where ever) to save money. So, it will have to raise prices $2K for tariffs. BUT...moving production back to the US would also cost more -- perhaps $2K per car??? Maybe more? So, no reason to move production back to the US. Especially since tariffs will end eventually (more on that in a moment.)In the mean time, other auto makers, using similar global production strategies will also have to raise the price of THEIR cars, so there is no reason for Ford to try and move production here for a price advantage, even if there is one.So, the "new normal" is more expensive cars. When the tariffs end, Ford gets a windfall as it does not roll back prices. So, the only effect of the tariffs is to increase prices and eventually corporate profits. No effects whatsoever on "rebuilding American manufacturing."So the real purpose is raise corporate profits and reduce corporate taxes by making consumers pay more taxes directly.Sounds about right.

@Nonilex Of course he did. They understand that SCOTUS will eventually rubber stamp anything TFG tell them to, so there is no need to follow lower court orders.Under our current SCOTUS, the rule of law is irrelevant. Which, ironically, means they themselves are irrelevant.

@Nonilex If the government can restrict or end one medical treatment for "reasons," they can restrict or end ANY medical treatment for "reasons."After trans people, women's health is next. Any woman who votes Republican is insane.

@Nonilex You have to love how white assholes like Trump hate places they have never been to and feel the need to "fix" them.TFG has never set foot in the Smithsonian. Nor the colleges he hates (because he did not actually get an education at his college) and he has certainly never been outside the limousine bubble in any city. His hatred knows no bounds and is not based on any data whatsoever. He hates everything that is not him. And there are hundreds of white psychopaths just like him, mostly in executive suites or driving huge black pickup trucks.

@Nonilex So, let me get this straight. The labor market is too good for the Fed to cut rates.A good economy pisses off TFG? So he wants to rig the numbers (and the Fed) so that the economy looks bad enough to cut rates. So TFG can lighten his debt load just a bit?
