365 Stories in 2023 - 8/365--"A Study in Emerald" (2003)by Neil GaimanIn an alternate reality England, The Queen of Albion looks to a "consulting detective" and his roommate, a veteran of the Afghan wars, to solve the grisly murder of her nephew, the Prince of Bohemia.Nothing is quite what it seems in Gaiman's wildly inventive union of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories and Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos.#books#bookstodon@bookstodon#SherlockHolmes#Lovecraft#Cthulhu

365 Stories in 2023 - 3/365--"The Hounds of Tindalos" (1929)by Frank Belknap LongHalpin Chalmers combines an exotic drug with esoteric knowledge in an attempt to travel through time. He succeeds, but the wonders of human history soon give way to indescribable horror.Long's style is dated in parts, but the titular creatures, later incorporated into the Cthulhu Mythos, are memorable, as is the contrast of good & evil to curves & angles.#books#bookstodon@bookstodon#horror#lovecraft

@bookstodon friends - what is the last great #ShortStory you read? You may have seen my posts, but one of my goals for the year is to read a short story each day.I'd like to fill in the gaps that are present in my reading, and avoid cycling through the same authors over and over.So tell me, what am I missing? Which masters of the short story haven't I discovered yet? What's that one story that I just have to read?#Books#Bookstodon#Reading#ShortStories

@grammargirl Is it the same person making two stops?I sometimes get two mail deliveries in one day. The usual carrier brings a mix of envelopes and packages, while the second delivery is from a different driver, who only delivers packages.I live near both a carrier annex and a distribution center; I'm not sure if each carrier is coming from a different location, or if the packages are being processed and shipped in multiple shifts.

#Books and #Bookstodon friends - are any of you familiar with the "Buddy Reads" functionality at #StoryGraph, and willing to tell me about your experience with it?I'd like to run a read-along or #BookClub style discussion of Roger Zelazny's A NIGHT IN THE LONESOME OCTOBER during the month of October. Right now, I'm considering StoryGraph or daily posts here, but I'm also open to suggestions that aren't GoodReads. Thanks!#Fantasy#Fiction#Horror#Reading
