The city is threatening to put the my deacesed neighbor's home on a "blight" list which is basically condemned but with super-high taxes. I had already spoken with her neice this morning when the city came out. The neice wanted a handyman but now it sounds like she will need a "crew". All of the exposed wood has to be painted, porch is caving in, and door is broken and boarded up.

Yesterday I went to secure this sort of shed thing attached to the house. There was a dead animal (long dead) inside, I think a possum.I have tremendous guilt although I never wanted to alienate our neighbor. We shoveled snow for her, asked her if she needed things, and accepted that she didn't want us to intrude. The way she was living was very sad, and who knows what kind of clean-up the interior needs. None of the outdoors structures are safe, not even the front porch.

The house regulation man said he'd been to the property many times over the years and reported it but there was nothing to do when occupied. The mailman said he'd reported it as unsafe many times, too. I find it hard to believe that there was nothing they could have done to help the woman.

My 81-year-old neighbor lived in squalor but bought shoes online from Lord and Taylor and had packages coming all the time. She even owned other properties but who knows what shape they were in. I feel like it's a Gray Gardens situation

Definitely. I am angry that her aunt isn't put in the ground yet and the govt (or possibly other neighbors who called govt) are trying to make a time like this even harder. She knows the structure is unsafe, but she lives/works in Chicago and has to plan a funeral and do so much legal shit because her aunt was not organized. Her mother died long ago and she lived with her aunt until she was an adult. She & her sons are the only ones handling any of it. This just adds to the legal pains. Her voice sounds like pure exhaustion. @Fullycaffeinated

I am tired. I have been coping with the neighbor situation, which I never expected and I am now all-in in terms of helping. I just don't know who else would help if I didn't? Women, we are like this anyway, this is the unpaid labor we talk about. The neighbor's boyfriend said he'd do some work to make the house better, and he's gone AWOL. I am angry that I comforted him. He isn't even going to the funeral. He hasn't even called the niece back. He spent almost every day with this woman for 15 years, and now his broken BMW is in the yard, and he's not even returning calls to the family. Maybe it's guilt. But something is wrong with this situation. And the woman had repeatedly told me he was inheriting that house. I hope not.

I have vented enough, lol. I have spent time with some of the other elderly neighbors recently, and I will make sure that they are always OK when it snows. I am glad they are a couple so they can look out for each other.

No, she was alone, with a much younger boyfriend who had no key. They had to break in to get her. 😠My husband always said that man was after her money or using her for her money, we didn't know he was her boyfriend until a few days after she died.
