I'm considering buying myself an old thinkpad. Which is the one to get, in your opinion?

It seems like every day there is a new attack against us, against our future. Every day, the world gets a little less safe, a little less free. How are you fighting back?

I have mentioned my little pirate box in the past, yes? Well, I'm planning on doing more and similar stuff this year. Specifically, I'm looking at self hosting some services and connecting them back to the larger internet. I'm trying to decide which things I want to self host, and which things I want to connect to the internet, and how.

For example, I think I want to make my Kodi server accessible remotely. I think I can do this by running a VPN that connects to my home network, and connecting to that from my mobile devices, and then using UPnP. I can't think of a reason that *wouldn't* work, as long as I take the time to tinker it together correctly.

@acidburn Thanks for this. My goal is to stream from my kodi server to a mobile device. I currently do this using a UPnP streaming app. Are you saying that there is a better way to do that?

@acidburn Right. I think that maybe I'm not explaining myself, or maybe you're not familiar with this use of UPnP. I'm hoping to connect to my local VPN, and then use UPnP for service discovery from my streaming server to my UPnP playback app. This only works for devices on the same network, which is why I would need the VPN in the first place. Without using UPnP, how would my media player find the videos stored on my Kodi server?

@acidburn Do you have a playback app you can recommend that supports that?

@acidburn At the moment, both. In the future, just Android.

@acidburn Thanks! I'll check if it's in fdroid, as I don't currently have play services on my android devices.

Over the holiday shopping season, microcenter ran a deal on the Pi 0w. $5, limit one. I don't have a microcenter near me, but I was visiting some friends that do (so now you have enough information about me to determine that I have friends in one of fiftish regions that could be considered Near Microcenter. I'm just days away from doxing myself) and I bought one. I now have a tiny computer with wifi and bluetooth connectivity that cost me five dollars. I'm trying to decide what to do with it.

Top contenders: - Set it up to allow local SSH over wifi, and configure a couple of bluetooth serial ports. Use it as a local tilde server. - Install a PDP-8 (or other minicomputer) emulator. Use it as a local mainframe. - Connect it to a spare television, write a script to have w3m or lynx cycle through various web pages (news headlines, stats, Mastodon feeds, etc.)

Hey Town and Greater fediverse, I'd like to talk about TV. I want to see us producing independent television programming. Talk shows, fiction, sports (even if it's just the local little league or school league), news. I want to see us making things to entertain one another. I want to help create and spread these things. I want to see us sharing tips and tricks, intro bumpers, animations (2D and 3D), music. (You know how people sell video game assets on itchi.io? Why can't we do the same kind of thing with TV show assets and services? CC-BY-SA that stuff, and share your source files!) There is no reason we couldn't have something as well produced as, say, The Computer Chronicles ( https://archive.org/details/ModemsBu1985 ) with a minimum of effort. (well, there's one reason. Gary Kildall isn't with us anymore, and his insight and vision is sorely missed.) But we have enough personality out here on the fediverse that we could easily, communally, collaboratively make media that reaches beyond us. #CC #creativeCommons #media #patreon ? #LetsMakeArt #TV

@garrett @sean Storage space and bandwidth are big concerns. I view peertube as a potential distribution medium rather than as an archival platform (especially as it transcodes videos) The best video archival platform I'm aware of is http://archive.org, I tend not to stream from them though, so as not to cost them extra money on bandwidth. My plan at the moment is: - Self host a low resolution video on my personal website, in case something happens to peertube, with links to all the other canonical sources. - Post a higher resolution (but bitrate starved) version to peertube for general consumption - Post a full resolution, mid-to-high bitrate copy to archive.org - Share a copy via Dat or Onionshare bittorrent from my home network - Use a CC-BY-SA license so that other people are empowered to archive and share (and remix!) copies as well. - and, ideally, to do all of the above through an automated workflow.
