@ZachWeinersmith I still think about the proposal years ago to fight spam by essentially charging a penny per email. You want to get in my inbox? Spend a penny. E-commerce would have to factor it in and it’s be a wash in the case of freinds. The big issue is always how to handle the money unfortunately.

@ZachWeinersmith I also miss the opinionated attitude of so many early web fan sites. Like someone would have megabytes of obsessively hand-written episode guides and such for the Muppets or whatever, then you’d find that one episode offended then so much they refuse to even acknowledge its existence. So many modern wikis have adopted a very bland, neutral tone that is factual, but not fun.

@ZachWeinersmith I wonder if some of it is an attempt to say “look how smart I am!” Between writing the fun bits.

@ZachWeinersmith Connectivity is important, and people need to be able to travel to the site to work occasionally.

@futurebird We’ve noticed a lot with dog breeds ( #shihtzu in our case) and very generic ai-narrated videos of things like “top signs your <breed> secretly hates you.”

@ZachWeinersmith Is Y2K a relevant reference? Everyone expected massive failures of various systems and very little happened… due to tons of developers and support preparing and fixing things before they felll down.for supply chains there was a lot of reorganization. The toilet paper one is interesting as I’ve heard the paper mills had to pivot from commercial products to residential products and did so poorly, causing shortages. (Plus hoarding of course.)

@ZachWeinersmith I’ve had good luck with some of Ken Forillish’s recipes. Specifically for two in a cast iron skillet. Biggest problem is you really do only need a big spoon of sauce for 8” diameter pizza: too much and it gets watery.

@grickle I think Stephen King’s IT was an immortal or at least very old entity that had been in the region for centuries, so this could have happened even if he hadn’t taken that form yet.

@selea @StryderNotavi I occasionally get ads with generated voiceovers on streaming: I consider it a sign of a low quality or scammy product.

@ricci @skinnylatte Reminds me of years ago when a coworker in the anime fandom was surprised at all the guys in grass skirts adjacent to an event. I let him know Jimmy Buffet was in town for a concert.
