@grammargirl I think it's just a matter of numbers. Y'all seems to have a home in the broadest demographic over yinz and youse. "You guys" is already pretty acceptable, just not in formal language, and I think it'll stay that way.I 150 years, I think apostrophe-less yall will be in a number of dictionaries.

@grammargirl Unless, of course -- going in the other direction -- we can bring thee/thy/thou/thine back and make you ONLY plural again.

A recipe for 30 Minute Chocolate Croissants is different from a recipe for 30-Minute Chocolate Croissants. #amediting

@grammargirl Usage changes among the panel are rarely unanimous. I'd like to know about the sticklers who always voted against change. Were any of the overly adamant? Anybody quit over too much change, and if so, what was the final straw?

@grammargirl Like other such word phenomenon names (mondegreen, cutthroat compound), the word itself ought to be an example. Maybe a "tofuing" from "ILVTOFU."

Can anyone help me with an Academic-->Plain English translation? In lay terms, what does it mean to have "held a tenured appointment"?

I sometimes forget that I have a blog. Maybe "had" is more correct -- I haven't blogged in 3 years. But occasionally I remember it's there and go back for a visit, and there's some fun stuff, like this post about classic novels written about copy editors (with help from some of y'all) https://logophilius.blogspot.com/2018/01/great-works-of-copy-editing-literature.htmlAll my short stories about Mark Flyleaf of the Bureau of Fictional Character Placement are on there, too. Maybe someday I'll get back to blogging.

@grammargirl I feel like ther was a time when a lot of my blog posts were more or less just apologies and embarrassment for not having posted in so long. I just don't know where I would find the time (and the subject matter) today.

@grammargirl Yeah. I looked at it at least three times on separate editorial rounds and didn't see it. I keep it on my bulletin board as a constant reminder not to get lazy.

Is this yet another indication that I just need to accept that "sunk" is now acceptable as a simple past tense of "sink"? Has "sank" sunk? What say you #editors? #usage

I've been writing a regular column about etymology for at least half a decade, and I've been interested in the subject since my 20s. But today - TODAY - I recognized that the word "album" is Latin for "whiteness." Which means that the Beatles' "White Album" is bilingually the "White Whiteness."This is why etymology is fun.
