Valve is persuading the HDMI Forum to allow open source support for HDMI 2.1 on Linux without restrictions on SteamOS 💫This video standard brawl isn't a do-or-die problem for the Steam Machine - most won’t even notice. The HDMI Forum holds Linux gaming back artificially tho. Society could just drop HDMI, adopting free'er DisplayPort where common sense is missing 😉If Valve succeeds towards '26 - it'll be a huge victory for all.https://www.techpowerup.com/343814/valve-trying-to-unblock-open-source-hdmi-2-1-support-on-steam-machine#HDMI_2_1 #HDMI #Valve #SteamOS #Linux

@cynical13 Yes, so user can choose. Regular Mozilla Firefox is making it opt-out (and probably via needlessly technical way - not with a "click of a button").

@hj Firefox derived does not mean "equals Mozilla Firefox" - since Firefox itself is open source; forks can rip out anything they want and go "clean".

a statement from LibreWolf team:"As there seems to have been recent confusion about this, just a quick "official" toot to then pin: we haven't and won't support "generative AI" related stuff in LibreWolf. If you see some features like that (like Perplexity search recently, or the link preview feature now) it is solely because it "slipped through". As soon as we become aware of something like this / it gets reported to us, we will remove/disable it ASAP." https://chaos.social/@librewolf/115716906957137196

a statement from Vivaldi team:"Today, as other browsers race to build AI that controls how you experience the web, we are making a clear promise:We’re taking a stand, choosing humans over hype, and we will not turn the joy of exploring into inactive spectatorship. Without exploration, the web becomes far less interesting."https://vivaldi.com/blog/keep-exploring

a statement from Waterfox team:"... browsers are operating systems of their own, and a browser’s job is to be a good steward of that environment. AI, in its current form and in my opinion does not match that responsibility.... The core browsing experience should be one that fully puts the user in control, not one where you’re constantly monitoring an inscrutable system that claims to be helping you.Waterfox will not include LLMs. Full stop."https://www.waterfox.com/blog/no-ai-here-response-to-mozilla/

@hj @warmbeverageenjoyer There are many options and browsers (plus their teams) are prone to grow. Ladybird and Servo based ones in development then again provide a whole new ground. Happening already possibly next year.

@hj @warmbeverageenjoyer Basically there are just choices for pretty much everyone. If Vivaldi (for example) is the one making someone *looking for automatic AI:less browser* sticking with Linux - it's worth to put there innit. Have not heard much bad at all about Vivaldi either...

@hj @warmbeverageenjoyer Sure - that is one way to see it. But there are surprisingly many ppl who cannot find their home in any of the free as in freedom browsers - and still want to use a PC computer - so there's that. Nothing prevents discovering other options later on - as the time goes by - and information about sorts of things you're talking about and are important to YOU, increase.
