Most Afghan refugees will flee to neighbouring countries. The areas with most refugees need special economic zones with tariff free access to and investment from rich economies so they can employ refugees and locals. The UN camps ban refugees from working or starting a business!

"On 23 June, the United States Intelligence Community estimated that the Afghan government could fall within the next six months following the U.S. withdrawal. On 10 August, U.S. officials revised the previous six month estimate, saying that it could happen much more quickly, and that some scenarios envisioned the fall of Kabul within 30 to 90 days.On 13 August, reports appeared that "senior western diplomatic sources" expected the Taliban to enter Kabul within the next seven days."

Signalise is a platform co-op that enables users to request and book interpreting services. Its democratically owned by deaf people, health staff and interpreters. This year they raised £330,000 pounds of investment in a crowdfunding campaign, exceeding their target by 10%.It has now won the bid to become the main service provider for sign language interpreter services for the National Health Service in Liverpool, the fifth largest city in the country.https://medium.com/signalisecoop/signalise-co-op-announced-as-nhs-liverpool-ccg-main-provider-5a52b1346fdc

How do we protect left wing organisations from people with dark triad personality?Been reading about these people and lot of stuff clicked, as it matches well with many experiences I have had of toxic people damaging organising efforts.

New idea - a website that collects links to all ongoing fundraising campaigns of striking workers. It would be a #platformcoop owned by those who make a recurring monthly donation, that would be distributed equally between all active fundraising campaigns that month.Thoughts? Here is an image to illustrate what it could look like.

My uncle just finished 1.6 kg, 700 pages long dictionary of Northern Sami, a language spoken by around 20,000 speakers.Sami are an indigenous people who have inhabited large parts of Northern Europe spanning from Russia to Norway for millenniums. He has dedicated his life to advocate for their rights and preserve their languages and culture. This book is a major contribution in an effort to ensure that this ancient language will be passed on to future generations.

Feel like lack of awareness if overestimated as an explanation for why so few coops exist. The US has less worker coops than Finland, even though US has 60x more population. I bet there is at least 10x more people in the US aware of worker coops.Just looking at the huge variation in coop creation rates between areas, doubt lack of awareness is a key factor here.Of course, its a problem and no one is saying that its everything. BUT it seems to be most cited reason by coop enthusiasts.

I am bullish on France. They have an amazing and booming cooperative and solidarity economy sector. For example, all companies with over 50 employees are required to provide employees an option for "solidarity savings accounts" that invest 5-10% of their savings into solidarity economy enterprises. Over 1 million people have already opt in, with assets compounding and booming. The largest such funds are managed by cooperative banks, that make up 60% of the country's banking sector.

@lain Mostly cooperatives, mutuals and other similarly organised enterprises. They need to have a pay ratio cap and distribute certain minimum of surplus either to members or charitable organisations.

In France, over a million people have opened a "solidarity economy savings account" that invests in solidarity enterprises, many of which are cooperatives. The popularity of the accounts is booming. Here is my article about this promising phenomenon - it is an issue of a weekly newsletter that covers existing success stories & exciting new ideas about the future of the cooperative movement.Consider subscribing, every new subscriber makes me very happy :)https://www.getrevue.co/profile/coop_exchange/issues/solidarity-economy-saving-accounts-are-booming-in-france-985961

Any resources for starting a purchasing co-op?The plan is to start one for businesses in the UK (first with members of CoTech, a network of tech worker coops) to purchase easy-to-repair & made-to-last electronics: first Framework laptops & FairPhone smartphones. The second step is to start a consumer-owned online shop for ordinary people to buy such electronics. They can become members for £1/month and get discounts on spare parts & repairs. The shop would be a member of the purchasing coop.

Many Web3 folks say it's "like coops/mutuals but scaleable".How do we measure scale?Coop banks have 900 million members worldwide: US credit unions alone have added 35+ million since 2008 (+10% of the population!).The value of all Web3 firms combined would be less than a rounding error for Vanguard, a mutual which owns +10% of the S&P 500: up from 4% in 2008.I'm all for trying out new ideas on user ownership, but so far, it has been Web3 that has failed to scale: not coops or mutuals.

What do others in #SocialCoop think about us becoming a Mastodon Gold or Platinum tier sponsor for Mastodon? We could maybe give it a try for few months, might be that it attracts new members whose membership fees exceed the cost of sponsorship?

@django I thought that was just unconditional donation. Think it would require another discussion and vote to decide whether to do a sponsorship that includes Social Coop getting promotion in exchange.
