I remember setting up a linksys 802.11g router in my house 20 (‼️) years ago and trying to get the wireless adapter we got for the Xbox to connect. The router came with a default WEP password that was absurdly long. I think it was 128 characters. It worked for our pc with a wireless card. It worked on our laptop. It did not work with the Xbox. We tried case sensitive. No luck. All caps. Nothing. All lower case. Nope. We changed the password, removed the password, reset to factory. Xbox didn’t like it. 6 months of daily attempts later I found a network mapping app that had a tool to convert WEP passwords to hex, and that worked for some fucking reason. Then in grad school I learned how to perform a replay attack on a WEP network with aircrack, but it took hours. Then I remembered the hex thing and it took less than 5 minutes. Not sure why I’m thinking of this now.

Unpopular opinion time:“What happened to the US rail roads? They used to be the world standard, now they barely exist”The New Deal happened. It established the US Interstate system that we tied directly into our city infrastructures. Those routes follow federal directives. Later deregulation of the railroads allowed them to consolidate and decline. “Why are our cities so reliant on personal car ownership?” The new deal. See above. “But didn’t the new deal help us get out to the Great Depression?”Yes, but not as much as becoming an arms factory to fuel the European war effort.“Why is our foreign policy secretary to destabilize the world?”To fuel the industry mentioned above. “So why did the trains die again?”Because we built a lot of cars and planes during the war and continued to sell them to consumers after. “Why do we have a gun issue?”See above, but add guns to the list.

@mayonesa Unions are meant to be the workers representing themselves to negotiate their terms. The moment you have third-party for-profit ventures stepping in, you don’t have a union, you just have external HR and a second set of bosses.

@mayonesa I disagree that all unions are bad. Some bring much needed change. Some actually are on the side of the workers. Our society would be objectively worse without any of them. But some are so bad that the word itself has been tainted.

@mttaggart Did you know that the Texas constitution forbids the holding of public office for anyone who does not “acknowledge the existence of a higher power” and that judicial and law enforcement positions are considered public office? There is no separation of church and state.

@wall_e @catsalad I miss when the Apple used to light up on MacBooks. My wife had a custom Portal turret sticker that made the eye glow. We intentionally never put pictures of it on the internet because it was so cool we didn’t want it stolen and becoming common (like good tattoos becoming trendy). Since that’s not a thing anymore, here it is. This is the second sticker we had made, the first was lost when the screen needed replacement. The first version had much nicer lines and thicker vinyl; the light only shined through the red.

@0x00string Oh Jesus, we love you so much we named our country after you. It is the savior (you). The capital is Saint savior (also you). And here’s our death camp.
