Here's something fun and weird I got recently! This is a Sup Game Box, a handheld Famiclone in a Game Boy form factor! Let's take a little peek inside!

Inside the box, there isn't much: the Sup itself, a micro USB-B cable for charging, a composite cable with mono audio out and a 3.5mm jack for connecting to the Sup, a BL-5C battery (and fully compatible with all replacements), and a small paper manual.

I have another Sup Game Box with a different library of built-in games. The one on the left was advertised as a 500-in-1 model, while the new one I got on the right was advertised as a 400-in-1 model.https://bootleggames.fandom.com/wiki/Sup_Game_BoxThe Sup Game Box was based off the Retro FC Famiclone, with a VT02 based NES SoC as its basis and a ROM chip containing the games.https://bootleggames.fandom.com/wiki/Retro_FChttps://bootleggames.fandom.com/wiki/VTxx

Opening it up reveals.... wow, not very much. The board is extremely basic, with only a few resistors, an oscillator, the battery terminal, a micro USB port, the 3.5mm jack, a power switch, a reset button, the VT02 as an epoxy blob, the ROM chip soldered in the corner, and a couple of silkscreened bits of revision info. The buttons, aside from the reset button, are simple contact pads. The board is silkscreened with the following identification info: C2-001 VER:1.0 20200915... a manufacturing date? A design date?Below that is another date: 20210118. Perhaps this is the manufacturing date of this unit? The LCD is a simple 2.6" screen with no manufacturing information on it. Who built this screen? Was it just a cheap LCD they got in bulk?

As for the game selection, it's kinda par for the course with these kinds of Famiclones. Lots of repeated games, and a handful of homebrew games that take advantage of the VT02.Of course, there are plenty of wacky ROM hacks, too.

Some side-by-side comparisons of the two Sups. The screen on the black Sup is smaller than the one in the grey Sup, and while it has brighter color output, is a little more "noisy" than the grey Sup.The grey Sup suffers from slightly washed out looking color. However, both do suffer from off-kilter palettes in-game, but that's more of a side effect of the VT02's implementation of the NES PPU.Neither are perfect in any way, shape, or form, but this is expected. They're bootleg devices, and of course cheaply designed. Don't ever expect any kind of accuracy when it comes to bootleg devices.

@miah @CyberpunkLibrarian @Polychrome Which means using a SmartyPi, or stuffing the Pi and a screen into a Pelican case!
