@mpjgregoire Admittedly, this is not as much of a concern in the Northeast, which tends to be even now fairly ethnically segregated, as in the South, West, and Midwest, where it is not.

@fribbledom I've lived in that cabin in the woods. Not only is the best internet you can get infuriatingly slow, the stores are so far away you have to be gone at least a couple of hours if you need groceries, so you end up planning out ways of only going once a month or so, which means it takes all day because you need to buy more stuff.

In all the straw controversy, one of the most interesting things to me is the silencing of the community of people who are disabled in ways that make it impossible for them to drink (and in some cases, eat) without adjustable plastic bendy straws.Basically, to certain people, sea turtles are more important than humans with disabilities.

Well, I suppose I shouldn't say it's literally impossible for them to drink without plastic bendy straws, but it's impossible for some people to do so independently.I honestly have more compassion for these people who want to retain some degree of independence than I do for random animals.

Yes, plastic waste is a problem, but banning plastic straws is not only such a small thing as to cause very little net change, it's actually damaging to people with certain types of disabilities, so on balance I think it's not worth it.

@curt The sad fact of the matter is that the vast majority of individuals nowadays are not conscientious and don't pay attention to much besides themselves. I do agree that the answer shouldn't be to ban things just because the majority of the population is irresponsible, but I don't know what the answer is, either.

“You only have power over people so long as you don’t take everything away from them. But when you’ve robbed a man of everything he’s no longer in your power — he’s free again.” #Solzhenitsyn

The only thing I ever wanted out of life, what I have dreamed about as long as I can remember, was to be a SAHM. Instead, I am the breadwinner in an unconsummated marriage. My husband's attention is entirely consumed by caring for his parents and distracting himself from how increasingly depressed I am. I keep hoping that I won't live to see 40 because I don't know what else to do.

@rmaffeo I have a family history of hemorrhagic strokes, and yes, this is something everyone should know.
