@bobdobberson I am in fact capabale of seeing how capitalism affects my life. Im just smart enough to know that adopting some other ideology in its place isn’t a magic fix for problems which remain systemic in society. No matter what you choose someone always loses. Most people just want to choose something they believe will give them power over others. No one really cares about their fellow man. They just have a vested interest in being right.

@icedquinn @bobdobberson ya the issue with direct democracy is it’s just a numbers game. No justice can be had as there is always someone who loses to the majority. The idea that having more people on your side means your ideas are sound is madness. Maybe one larger group of people suddenly decides that people who like the color blue are a problem. Do we all follow them to mass murder?

@raccoon @newt if you look close you’ll find that trolling culture is part of an older surf punk culture that used to use Nazi imagery to scare away out of town surfers. It’s the same thing online. The edge lords use it to confuse you so anyone looking at their often open but anonymous boards will see this stuff and not look any further. That doesn’t mean unironically Nazis don’t exist but they are a very infentesimally small group mostly republicans.

@raccoon @newt it depends on the person of course. It’s too bad the state of online trolling has fallen from its once high art status to just yelling slurs at people online for no reason. @raccoon @newt people who didn’t get the joke took it seriously and still do. It’s why on occasion 4chin gets blamed for mass murder. Of course now you also have a new element involved there a lot of actors who use it to spread black propaganda. It’s now a space where information warfare is carried out along with other boards like 8kun and Reddit.

@raccoon @newt this influence of bad actors is one of the reason I’m pro decentralization and also pro private discussion not everything you say needs to be public knowledge. Having private spaces where you speak your mind can still be a thing and not relying on central locations is key to that. Although I do think anonymity has a huge place in public discourse.

@raccoon @newt I’ll try. As a society we have gone very rapidly from private discussion among peers to open and very public discussion of things we shouldn’t. That’s largely a result of technology. Anonymity protects everyone who uses it even the bad actors like nation state propagandists. It’s still a useful tool for regular people. I believe that NOT having a public forum with a single point of control like a bulletin board may be key to recovery.

@raccoon @newt for example the MAGA people who follow trump as their cult leader have their own activity pub island over at truth.social. The antifa people have their own instances of mastodon. They can either decide to be walled off entirely or choose who they allow federation with. It also puts more people in charge of their respective communities rather than one group of moderators with their own agenda controlling everything like twitter.
