@pantsu IMO the reason handguns probably seem so intimidating is too many people take for granted basic safety rules because they're small - ie always treat it as loaded, don't point at something you aren't willing to shoot, etc. Ironically the smaller the caliber the more challenging it is to shoot consistently just because the recoil for whatever reason is larger the smaller the handgun.9mm handguns are good for beginners - recoil is not hard to get used to and are comfortable to grip for most hand sizes.Going straight to the AR to learn how to handle and shoot wouldn't be a bad thing either - as you mentioned having the buttstock in your shoulder provides stability if you're not confident in having to hold at the ready for a long period of time.
