hi all :3 server went splodey but i fixed it i thinkcause: server ran out of storage due to an application unexpectedly caching large amounts of data so fast that an alert wasn't fired for it. server hardlocked and had to be rebooted, and docker networking was completely toasted to the point that the daemon wouldn't even start when the machine came back up.resolution: application reconfigured to limit cache size. docker automated networking disabled as much as possible. investigating whether switching to podman would provide a more stable experience.sidenote: lmao some of y'all cookin up rumors 👀 if kitty.social goes away for good, i'd at least leave a static page explaining why, but I still have no intention of taking it down.

Been too tied up with IRL stuff lately to worry about much more than just making sure my services stay running :ablobnervous2:

@Linux@mk.absturztau.be @starlight@mk.absturztau.be Just one of those once-in-a-while gargantuan infrastructure issues. Doesn't happen often, but does happen on occasion. That problem is still there, as some sort of DNS issue with Docker, but there's a functioning workaround. Still working out an infrastructure restructure to solve the issues I've had so far, for whenever my yearly contract is up with OVH.

@starlight@mk.absturztau.be @Linux@mk.absturztau.be I felt pretty bad after I had gotten the site back online and saw the thread where you were upset that it had gone offline without warning. I'm very hands-off these days as my day job and personal life have both picked up significantly, but I do retain my commitment to keep the site going so long as people are using it. Alas, it's just me running it at the end of the day (trust is a hard line that I don't even want to start on to find a co-admin), and though the site has backups, it has no redundancy to keep it running until I can fix a problem. Hosting ain't cheap either, and I've got my reasons for not asking for support, that notably have nothing to do with personal pride.

Honestly, I could probably really use a lawyer, but that's not exactly on the budget right now, which is why I'm currently operating according to my best interpretation of the laws. Peertube's functionality makes it a "social media site" by definition, and I have no way of affirmatively age-gating the service, which is why kitty dot tube went down, because a $20,000 fine will ruin my entire life. Misskey/forks, hilariously, sidestep a couple of the classifications of "social media site" according to the relevant laws, which is why kitty dot social is still operational. And, the server itself is located in Virginia, US, but I'm in FL jurisdiction, and though I operate almost exclusively by pseudonym online, I'm by no means anonymous.Any of that could change at any time. I'd like to get the server out to Canada because of the current climate in the US, but that's got its own set of "what-ifs". I'm happy to keep things running as long as I feel it's safe to do so, but I can't make any guarantees on things that are outside of my power, and I'm not going to put myself in legal/financial danger if I feel it's a risk. The best I can do in this situation is just be clear with what's going on.

It's not unfeasible whatsoever considering that Meta is federating activitypub.If you're trying to remain internet-anonymous, your opsec is in your hands. Common reminder to keep your identities isolated, and if you've got something private, Fedi isn't the place for it, even in a DM, even if you trust your admin. Find a trusted E2E messaging app like Signal or Matrix and talk there.I'm not vouching those apps either, I'm not currently on top of which apps are secure and which aren't, just trying to preach common sense lmao.

System updates seem to have borked the server running kitty.social a little more than usual. In the coming days, I'm going to be rearchitecting the server so that it can hopefully be a bit more stable.
