@stuxEh. He made most of his money buying an already existing company with money he got owning a potential rival to Confinity. All he did was hype a product he didn't invent and watch his stock value increase.He's a competent self-promoter with enough money to skirt regulations. But now with too much money to competently manage his public image.

@avalos I've seen this take a lot today, but it really just sounds like people expect Mastodon to be a platform to discuss... Mastodon. If that's what y'all want, then why should anyone stick around? I don't think that circle jerk is any more interesting than the Musk related ones.

@stux Don't undervalue numbers! Communities live and die by their numbers. Too small, and many people wont end up joining -- they need people to latch on to; too big, and they stop really being communities.I get that people trying to subvert corporate, capitalist frameworks of public engagement are going to be a little gun-shy about some of the emblems of those frameworks, and that those frameworks are steeped in numbers-chasing, but it's important to not conflate the things problematic entities look at and consider with the entities themselves. Numbers are good if the serve your purpose.The corporate entities care about numbers, though, because their purpose is growth of revenue. They're trying to monetize their users, and that monetization is at the micro-scale. They're trying to squeeze a small amount of revenue and stock value out of a large number of people. They want more people to squeeze, and to figure out how to squeeze harder.Just stay motivated by something better.

@stux @GivMeCoffee @Froggo The "free speech" thing is also about the state not using force to silence critics or opponents of the government. Individuals aren't infringing on someone else's freedom of speech by telling them to hit sand. The right to free speech is not the right to a captive audience.

If the world had taken a 2 month vacation at the start of the pandemic, we could have contained it. But heaven forbid we tell the most selfish people in society "no" for once.Of course people will be selfish. Of course they won't think of someone else's safety if it means their mild discomfort. Being selfish is rewarded at the highest levels. Being considerate is not. People are going to mimic behaviour they see modelled at the highest heights of power.

@stuxA global time raises the same exceptions I have to the proposals to permanently adopt summer time: The sun don't be overhead at 12. This is unacceptable to me. I am willing to consider a global time that is pegged to my location, whatever it may be at any give time, however. @ScriptFanix
