@simon @evan @luis_in_brief the other part of it is that a 301 redirect model doesn't fit with the half-assed signing model for posts. We have a way to redirect sites and archives, and followings, with a modest amount of overlap of both sites being up, and it was baked into feeds and WebSub at the http layer, but the "spray the new, ignore the old" model didn't map as well.

“The broader trends amongst students, teachers, and even policy makers, is that every group is willingly adopting a tool that supplants the broad scope of human learning and ability with a narrow tool that generates a pastiche of whatever was posted online.” https://medium.com/bits-and-behavior/more-than-calculators-why-large-language-models-threaten-public-education-480dd5300939

This is a good point - I had COVID-19 for the second time, testing positive on Sunday 10th December and negative on Saturday 16th December. I spent the week in bed, reading Persuasion and half-watching anodyne TV. https://mastodon.social/@augieray/111619581517706894

This is brilliant in its own right, and also works as meta-commentary, as no LLM could get the scansion that tight and the rhymes that enjoyable: "well, actually"/polydactyly and plagiarise/Hbomberguys are markers of humanity https://mathstodon.xyz/@andrewt/112380073199982452

@futurebird it was certainly true at Apple when I was there 25 years ago that we had hacks in the OS to keep old versions of apps working that had been passing bad parameters to system functions that had been previously ignored. One I remember was variable rate playback in QuickTime. You were supposed to pass a fixed point speed, but in early versions it only played at 1x speed for any +ve number. There was a hack put in for specific apps that passed in 1 rather than 0x00010000 (1<<16)

Reporting of the latest UBI test programme is ignoring the key finding, obvious to anyone who knows low income people, that their first impulse was to spread the wealth to others. This thinking is so alien to economists and financial types that they barely discuss it. https://www.openresearchlab.org/findings/key-findings-spending

@mmasnick @quinn @riana @danmcd @alecm @normative I read this as "nerd herder" in the first post and thought it was a very different concept, and it also made me think of Carrie Fisher

@halfempty @Nickiquote exactly. If you were doing a Heinlein reference you'd call it Mycroft (from Moon is a Harsh Mistress) or Minerva (from Time Enough For Love). But Musk is basically Vroomfondel, making money on the chatshow circuit predicting what AI will do.

@Nickiquote @halfempty You know, I think what he is really building is the copy of the Total Perspective Vortex in Zarniwoop's pocket universe that is only there to serve his ego.

@Kensan @shortridge this reminds me of the "python only parses dates correctly after the 12th of the month" problem I had. (The dates in the files I was being sent had been changed to UK dd/mm/YYYY format. Python assumes mm/dd/YYYY unless the mm>12)

@ariaflame @Kensan @shortridge the other challenge with being back in the UK is that half the year UTC and local time are the same.Oh, and being near 0 longitude..

“We've normalized software catastrophes to the point where a Calculator leaking 32GB of RAM barely makes the news. This isn't about AI. The quality crisis started years before ChatGPT existed. AI just weaponized existing incompetence.[…]We've created a perfect storm: tools that amplify incompetence, used by developers who can't evaluate the output, reviewed by managers who trust the machine more than their people.”https://techtrenches.substack.com/p/the-great-software-quality-collapse

@clickhere @ColinTheMathmo @copiesofcopies @robinhouston Hiberno-English vs Cockney is always fun. After in Cockney is prospective, in Hiberno-English its retrospective. I've witnessed this incomprehension.Cockney Barman asking for an order: What are you after?Irish customer: I'm after riding the bus, thank you, but could I get a beer?
